Job Summary:

The Controller is responsible for overseeing, organizing, planning, directing and evaluating the accounting and finance functions for the Detroit Red Wings. This includes the following functions: accounting, internal and external financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, forecasting, financial analysis, variance analysis, and financial projects. The Controller also supports budgeting and league reporting and ensures financial policies, procedures and internal controls are adhered to.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the monthly forecasting process, including detailed review of all forecasts and collaborating with Department Leaders across the organization to develop realistic financial projections that can be used to drive timely decision making and are in-line with the Company’s strategy objectives. Prepare associated monthly reporting for leadership including variance analyses.
  • Support development of the annual budget, including management and organization of supporting files; creation of a timeline and key objectives and tracking progress towards completion; and detail review of all budgets. Collaborate across the company with Department Leaders to find efficiencies, drive value and establish a budget in-line with GAAP and organizational strategic priorities.
  • Responsible for accurate, complete and timely monthly closing of accounting records and ensuring all general ledger reconciliations are completed in accordance with established processes and schedules.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Treasury functions, including review and approval of all vendor invoices and authorization of all payments.
  • Interface with payroll department to ensure completeness and accuracy of all payrolls including appropriate account and cost center coding, complete posting to the GL and appropriate payment of all applicable withholdings. Prepare monthly salaries forecast and annual salaries budget including collaborating with the HR department and Department Leaders to ensure appropriate reporting of open positions, resignations and promotions.
  • Monitor and assess the performance of accounting, accounts payable and accounts receivable staff, including all performance evaluations, hiring, coaching and disciplinary action activities.
  • Assist with any NHL reporting requirements, including HRR-URO reporting, Box Office reporting, Off-season ticket reporting,, and ad-hoc requests. Assist and manage the annual HRR Agreed Upon Procedures including serving as the primary point of contact, responding to auditor requests and management and distribution of auditor requests.
  • Assist the VP of Finance in responding to requests for financial data from various sources (NHL, Bankers, ownership).
  • Create and implement policies and best practices to facilitate the production of timely, accurate, and actionable financial information in an efficient manner for multiple levels of the organization.
  • Foster organizational awareness by maintaining positive relationships with other business units, departments and third parties, providing exceptional customer service satisfaction.
  • Aggressively identify inefficiencies in financial processes and implement innovative process improvements to reduce the time required to close the books and reconcile account balances.
  • Provide financial reporting and act as liaison to IHI tax department.
  • Provide support for strategic planning efforts, including capital budgeting, ROI/profitability analysis, and project management to ensure informed financial decision-making.
  • Review monthly sales and use tax payments and annual returns
  • Lead and direct the finance and accounting team to generate maximum efficiency and productivity by developing staff, utilizing meaningful metrics, establishing clear goals and by continuous review of policies and procedures.
  • Collaboratively review financial information with key stakeholders to identify insights and drive strategic decision making.
  • Promote a collaborative, innovative, and fun environment within the Finance team and across the broader organization.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting with a minimum 10 years of broad financial and accounting experience in a dynamic, diversified service organization (sports and live entertainment experience is preferred).
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles to ensure that financial results are in conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, including strong accounting technical research skills.
  • Strong knowledge of both internal and external financial reporting requirements.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and develop and implement solutions that address strategic business objectives.
  • Strong project management and process improvement skills, including demonstrated ability to think end-to-end and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Highly organized, self-driven business style with strong ability to prioritize, multitask, and direct the work of support staff.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to work across all departments and vertically at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven problem-solving skills that support sound issues resolution.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with high standards for quality; the ability to keep accurate and detailed records; and the ability to analyze the effectiveness of procedures and controls.
  • Demonstrated leadership and development skills to properly train and develop staff to meet department objectives.
  • Possess the highest integrity and ethical standards and the ability to command and inspire trust with all constituents.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Oracle ERP system skills.
