Job Summary

Interested in Participatory Action Research, mixed methods research, and/or participatory design? Want to work on a vital issue that has an impact on what information is available in our communities, especially information for or about people of color and LGTBQ+ populations? Have ten hours a week available to be a research assistant?

Shannon Crawford Barniskis, a faculty member from the School of Information Science, is hiring TWO hourly graduate student research assistants. Responsibilities include assisting with:

• Developing research study marketing materials

• Synthesizing a literature review

• Building a quantitative survey and analyzing the results

• Communicating with research participants and scheduling interviews

• Interviewing participants

• Analyzing qualitative data

• Writing or potentially presenting reports of the findings as a co-author/co-presenter

• And other duties as assigned.

Your input and voice will matter in this project, which examines public library boards of trustees: how they are selected and trained, and the decisions they make around issues such as book banning efforts, budgets, and information policy. You will be integrated at all points of the project, which could lead to co-authorship of publications in top journals in the field.

It is expected that these positions will take approximately 10 (flexible) hours per week. There will be occasional on-site activities in Lexington that will require a physical presence and occur at specific times, which are also flexible. These are 11-month positions (September 2024-July 2025). The research project will continue 2024-2027, and interested applicants may be able to continue in the position—potentially with further benefits and for more hours.
