About the Opportunity: The Senior Fermentation Engineer will join our Upstream Bioprocess Development team and will be responsible for the design & execution of fermentation experiments for development of new bioprocesses. The person will play a leading technical role in project management of fermentation programs within the group. In addition, the Sr. Fermentation Engineer will be responsible for tech transferring bioprocesses to CRO/CMOs. They will collaborate cross functionally with members of the Technical Operations team. Passionate about Fermentation and the role it plays in translating scientific discovery into commercial reality. Enjoys cross-functional collaboration, teamwork, and mentorship. In addition, has a passion for technical project management. Enjoys fermentation process development.  Strong safety mindset in a fermentation environment and have a strong attention to detail.
In this role you will be responsible for: Lead the development of new fermentation bioprocesses utilizing E. coli as an expression host for production of enzymes for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing & Life Science applications. Hands-on running bench-scale bioreactors, performing bench experiments, and providing mentorship/management to Research Associates & Engineers in the bioprocess development group.  Lead the authorship of tech transfer packages and transferring processes to CRO/CMOs. Following safety best practices and leading implementation of new safety processes.  Routinely present technical information to various audiences both internal and external to Bioprocess Development & Codexis. 
The essential requirements of the job include: M.S or B.S. in Chemical or Bioprocess Engineering, or related discipline with a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant industry experience respectively. Hands-on experience with bench scale fermentation for production of recombinant proteins in microbial hosts. Solid understanding of microbial physiology in the context of fermentation. Experience with fermentation control software troubleshooting and programing new control strategies. Exposure to pilot and commercial scale fermentation and demonstrated technical ability to understand and solve engineering issues involved during scale up. Previous experience with authoring tech transfer packages and providing oversight to CRO/CMOs. Experience with leading multiple fermentation-focused projects simultaneously and demonstrated experience of leading projects from start to finish.  Additional experience that would be valuable for this role includes:Experience working under a quality system (e.g. ISO, GMP) or manufacturing experience/exposure. Hands-on experience with primary recovery of enzymes and knowledge of downstream purification unit operations. Exposure to Cost of goods (COGs) and technoeconomic analysis (TEA) for bioprocesses. Development of high throughput solutions to bioprocessing e.g. HT fermentation systems. Expertise with Design of Experiments and handling large data sets. CODEXIS PAY TRANSPARENCY: The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Redwood City is $138,500 to $170,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Codexis is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states​.
