USGBC is seeking a Director, LEEDfor Cities and Communities to join our Technical Development Team. The Technical Development Team is responsible for executing the ongoing maintenance and evolutionary development of the of the rating systems managed by USGBC in a manner that hastens market transformation towards a more sustainable future. The body of work associated with this ongoing effort is achieved through collaborative engagement with internal and external subject matter experts and dedicated LEED committees. This team provides essential stewardship of the USGBC managed rating systems including the LEED rating system, ensuring that a position of market leadership is maintained, and the integrity of the consensus-based development process is preserved.

This position’s primary focus will be providing product oversight, project management, and strategic visioning for the technical development of the LEED for Cities and Communities (LFC) rating system. They will champion efforts to refine and create the next version of the rating system in a manner that holistically addresses these subject matter areas on a global scale. Considering the increased global focus and sense of urgency in areas related to sustainability, as well as significant advancements in related disciplines and technologies, we believe this is a an essential and very exciting opportunity to join the Technical Development Team.

Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Market Development

  • Provide expertise for the ongoing development and optimization of the LEED for Cities and Communities (LFC) rating system
  • Strategize and execute market analysis and engagement activities to establish near and far term strategic technical development plans for the rating system
  • Identify and facilitate implementation of strategies to increase adoption and uptake of the rating system.
  • Work collaboratively to identify and optimize synergies between rating systems.
  • Maintain level of expertise by staying abreast of new and developing industry issues, trends, scientific research, technologies, regulatory requirements, and industry standards / publications etc.
  • Aid in the creation of new offerings and optimization of existing offerings such as:
    • Education and credentialing
    • LEED rating systems, reference guides, forms, and educational materials
    • LEED Addenda, including LEED Interpretations
    • Global LEED programs
    • Pilot credits and alternative compliance paths
    • Public speaking and production of technical content for presentations

Process & Project Management

  • Manage and support the LEED for Cities and Communities Consensus Committee, a volunteer-based committee of industry experts tasked with development and maintenance of the LFC rating system.
  • Execute project management activities for the ongoing development of the rating system including:
    • Work planning and resource management
    • Establishment and management of processes and procedures for ongoing rating system development
    • Intradepartmental coordination and collaboration within the Technical Development Team
    • Interdepartmental coordination and collaboration
  • Assist in preparation and presentation of executive level communications regarding methodology, progress, and metrics for success.
  • Provide expert guidance in coordination with other departments to support projects pursuing certification and provide an optimized user experience.
  • Provide technical input to support digitalization of LEED for Cities and Communities online platform and facilitate development of protocols for LEED online.

Employee Supervision:

May provide oversight and management of staff based on project needs

Travel Requirements:

10%. Required travel is minimal, but may include presentations to LEED stakeholders, attendance at in-person committee meetings, and involvement in the world-class annual Greenbuild conference.

Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in architecture, engineering, or a related building industry or environmental discipline, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant professional experience
  • Technical understanding of and experience with urban level sustainability topics: decarbonization, resilience, equity, resource management.
  • Experience with developing and executing urban level sustainability initiatives and strategies.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Technical understanding of and experience with the LEED rating systems and programs.
  • LEED project team experience.
  • LEED Accredited Professional / Sustainability Excellence Professional / community scale GHG inventorying, climate resilience and risk credentials.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as a strong understanding of the level of research and breadth of perspective needed to develop an acceptable solution to technical issues.
  • Ability to multi-task, manage competing priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Consensus building experience.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with a diverse array of individuals and constituents.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Details:

  • Full Time, permanent, salaried, benefits-eligible, exempt status
  • Location: Remote or Hybrid in-office at 2101 L Street NW, Washington, DC
  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm EST, 40 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends
