BASIC FUNCTION:

The Director of the Center for Health and Wellness is responsible for the creation and on-going development of a comprehensive health promotion program for Howard University Medical Students. The Director will manage the College of Medicine health promotion efforts including the continued development of the mental health and life skills programs, activities, services, and the assessment of all wellness promotion initiatives.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Director will oversee mandated educational trainings for the entire College of Medicine student community. The Director is responsible for working with campus partners in the development and implementation of student learning outcomes and strategic planning. This position oversees student wellness education program development and growth.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

The position provides direct supervision of professional staff and oversight of supervision of graduate assistants and student employees. This position will develop and maintain campus partnerships, serve as a primary Student Wellness liaison, and serve as a representative of Student Wellness on campus and community-based committees. This position is also responsible for the coordination and facilitation of Student Wellness outreach efforts and the implementation of health promotion strategic goals and assessment.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Manage the College of Medicine health promotion and wellness outreach efforts.
  • Develop and manage outreach, promotion programs, and peer education efforts spanning student wellness concerns including Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use, Mental Health, Life Skill Development, Stress, Sleep, Sexual Violence, and more.
  • Actively participate in the development of student learning outcomes and strategic planning.
  • Provide wellness trainings and consultations for College of Medicine students.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of population-based wellness initiatives.
  • Manage content development and promotion of College of Medicine student mental health and life skills website.
  • Serve as a Wellness Advocate and as a key partner to the development and promotion of the program.
  • Coordinate, track, and report student wellness outreach events.
  • Oversee the daily functioning of the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion programs, activities, services, and experiences.
  • Actively lead and participate in the development and implementation of learning outcomes, strategic planning, and program evaluations to gauge program for quality and effectiveness.
  • Oversee mandated educational trainings for entire College of Medicine student community, which includes ensuring that students adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Initiate and foster liaison relationships with units across campus.
  • Develop and oversee all wellness related peer programs.
  • Develop and implement assessment tools and processes to assess effectiveness of prevention efforts, programs and services, and generate recommendations for adjustments to programs and services, when needed.

  • Ability to lead group discussions, prepare and deliver informational talks and workshops.
  • Ability to support and refer students to needed resources as they work toward making behavior changes.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment and discretion, particularly in sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Demonstrated creativity, resourcefulness, use of original ideas, and visionary skills in the performance of duties.
  • Knowledge of techniques related to assessment and collecting, compiling and dissemination of empirical data.
  • Skill working with a diverse population, demonstrated multicultural competency and the ability to integrate unique needs and concerns of multicultural populations into health promotion efforts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in public health, social work, psychology, counseling, higher education or related field required.
  • Five or more years of professional experience in Student Affairs, Student Wellness or related area required, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge and experience of best practices in health promotion for graduate student age populations.
  • Experience in the preparation and dissemination of wellness information, public health education, and population-based interventions.
  • Understand Title IX policies and procedures and processes for appropriate reporting and referral.
  • Supervisory skills and the ability to serve on a management team.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience recruiting, training, motivating, and advising peer educators.
  • If a clinician, must be currently licensed and if not already, be eligible for licensing in Washington, D.C.
