Automation Engineer (Building Automation)

Seeking Junior, Intermediate & Senior Engineers

Location: Philadelphia, PA


About The Role: Blackfield Associates are currently seeking an Automation Engineer (Building Automation) for one of our pharmaceutical manufacturing clients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the site, our client is implementing a high value upgrade program focused around Automation and EMS/BMS, and so the initial focus will be the successful delivery of this project.


Task Overview: In this role, you'll support the specification, design, development, installation, testing, and administration of control systems to meet the highest industrial and pharmaceutical standards. Primary focus will be ensuring the smooth and safe operation of automation systems in alignment with regulatory requirements.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for both new and existing automation systems.
  • Utilize your expertise in automation systems to manage the specification, design, and implementation of building automation and process control solutions, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Oversee the upgrade, patching, and modification of existing systems, addressing cybersecurity threats as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with system integrators, engineers, and contractors during automation project execution to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Lead the commissioning of new automation systems based on agreed-upon User Requirement Specifications (URS) and manage the resolution of any identified deficiencies.


Qualifications: Required Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Good experience in the pharmaceutical industry or similar manufacturing environments, demonstrating success in project delivery.
  • Solid experience in providing support, maintenance, or administration for existing automation systems.
  • Proven track record in specifying, designing, installing, and commissioning automation systems (PLC, SCADA, DCS, etc.).


Preferred Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
  • Some form of recognized IT qualification.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems such as Siemens Desigo/Apogey, Eurotherm Wonderware, or Schneider Continnum/EBO.
  • Experience working with SQL databases, including MS SQL Server.
  • Proficiency with PLC systems like Siemens S7 and Wonderware SCADA/HMI.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, BACnet.
  • Experience with field instrumentation and low-voltage electrical designs.
