Avon, United States Navisun Full time

Navisun, LLC is seeking an experienced and self-directed solar and storage project developer to manage our portfolio of community solar and other distributed generation projects in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Under ownership by a large Canadian pension fund (OMERS), we have a huge appetite for growth and a strategic imperative to build distributed generation solar and storage projects that we will own for decades. Given the long view of our owners, Navisun offers an opportunity to join a growing, well-supported team and to build a stable career and a valuable and sustainable clean energy future.

Company Background:

Founded in 2017, Navisun LLC is a solar and storage independent power producer within the United States that co-develops, develops, acquires, builds, owns, and operates distributed generation solar and energy storage projects. The Navisun team has completed numerous projects for municipal, commercial, utility, and institutional partners throughout the United States, with typical project sizes ranging from 1 to 30 Megawatts (MW). In January 2022, OMERS acquired Navisun to serve as OMERS’ distributed scale solar platform and to complement prior investments in the renewable energy sector.

The Massachusetts-based company now currently owns over 100 MW’s of distributed generation and possesses short- and long-term goals of reaching 150+ MW acquired annually and 1+ GW cumulatively, through a mix of organic and inorganic growth initiatives. Navisun is poised for significant growth with its strong pipeline, co-development partnerships, the continued pursuit of opportunistic acquisitions, and a committed owner in OMERS.

OMERS Infrastructure is an investment arm of OMERS, one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans with $114 billion in net assets (as of June 30, 2021). Headquartered in Toronto, OMERS also has offices in New York, London, Singapore, Sydney and other major cities across North America and originates and manages a diversified portfolio of high-quality investments in public markets, infrastructure, real estate and private equity. A long-term and patient owner, OMERS is committed to investing in the energy transition globally.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for all phases of project development of distributed generation assets (solar and energy storage) from origination to development completion and continued relationship management throughout construction. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Project Development team with project forecasting, boots on the ground market expertise, and following through on go-to-market strategy. Key responsibilities include:

  • Site origination and landowner outreach using GIS and other tools to effectively identify and evaluate new sites for solar feasibility.
  • Prepare, negotiate, and oversee the execution of site control agreements including lease and purchase options.
  • Schedule site visits and local stakeholder meetings, prioritizing in-person discussions for stronger relationship building.
  • Maintain a solid understanding of eligible project incentives, revenue sources, and programmatic rules.
  • Lead project permitting and obtain all required approvals at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Work with legal, environmental, and engineering consultants to efficiently drive project schedules and budget.
  • Manage utility interconnection applications through to final interconnection service agreements, ensuring all study milestones and payments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and negotiate local decommissioning and tax agreements.
  • Nurture relationships with property owners, consultants, host communities, and other project stakeholders.
  • Present to county/municipal boards, community stakeholders, and community members as needed to represent Navisun as a committed long-term partner.
  • Create sales presentations, proposals, and other materials as needed to support project development efforts.
  • Work closely with Navisun’s co-development partners to ensure efficient and cost-effective project development practices and clean project hand-offs.
  • Coordinate regularly with senior leadership, the Business Development team, and other Navisun departments to achieve team- and company-wide goals.
  • Support the internal finance, engineering, and construction teams to facilitate successful project financing and construction.
  • Collaborate with industry stakeholders and working groups to advance Navisun’s development objectives in relevant markets.

Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of solar/storage industry experience, with a successful track record in DG project development and stakeholder management, including experience dealing with federal, state, and local agencies for permits and approvals in the Northeast and/or Mid-Atlantic markets.
  • Hands-on and proactive engagement in market-level development issues, including interconnection, permitting, and community negotiations.
  • Proven project management skills with an ability to coordinate multiple tasks and make informed decisions in dynamic situations.
  • Proficient in GIS and project planning software and platforms (Smartsheets, Microsoft Project, etc.) and Microsoft Office software.
  • Well versed in solar and energy storage technologies.
  • Effective problem-solver and team player.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work both in office and remotely and be highly self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Ability to travel as needed (expected ~40% of time).
  • College degree, preferably in Environmental Science, Engineering, Business, Planning, Construction Management, or related field of study.
