Role Description

The Museum School’s Executive Director plays a pivotal role in the school's success by providing collaborative and strategic leadership, shaping the academic vision, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of this independent charter school located at a single site in San Diego’s Balboa Park. The Executive Director’s responsibilities are all centered around fostering and championing the Museum School’s vision. This involves working closely with Museum School’s leadership team and all stakeholders to create a nurturing and positive environment that maximizes student achievement, while also managing the school’s operations and offering programmatic support. A key responsibility will also be to ensure ongoing fiscal and legal compliance for the school. The Executive Director will act as the primary Museum School representative within the larger school community, the local San Diego community, and with the San Diego Unified School District, and will be expected to build strong relationships with staff, third-party consultants, vendors, and all additional stakeholders. 

Reporting to the Board of Directors of the Museum School, the Executive Director is officially employed as both the Principal and Superintendent of the School and Local Educational Agency

(LEA). This position entails the typical duties and authority associated with an administrator’s role and includes accountability to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is expected to devote their professional capacity and attention to the school’s business, consistently upholding the school’s mission and values.

The Museum School is dedicated to supporting the academic growth and abilities of our students through experiential, project-based learning. This approach extends beyond the classroom and integrates the arts with an evidence-based curriculum designed to meet content standards. Qualifications

  • Some educational leadership experience, preferred, or proven track record of highly successful teaching experience
  • Bachelor’s degree with relevant degree, preferred, or years of relevant work experience
  • Valid California Administrative Credential or Multi-subject Teaching Credential, preferred, but not required
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse stakeholders



Essential Responsibilities:

  • Developing and maintaining a positive school culture that embraces and focuses on the needs of all students.
  • Delivering a successful public educational program for families of San Diego.
  • Providing collaborative leadership in conjunction with the School’s leadership team to guide the direction of the School.
  • Managing personnel and school operations efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensuring exceptional school-wide communication to keep all stakeholders informed.
  • Providing programmatic oversight and support for the Special Education program.
  • Working with external organizations and negotiating on the school’s behalf.
  • Ensuring compliance with state and federal charter school laws.
  • Overseeing the successful completion of key state and district requirements.
  • Providing ongoing financial oversight and planning to ensure the school's fiscal health.
  • Planning and supporting fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Friends of the Museum School.
  • Collaborating with the student support team in responding to and handling discipline for students.
  • Leading crisis management efforts as needed to address various situations effectively.
  • Serving as a strong advocate for Museum School’s best interests and its culture.
  • Participating in the development and writing of the LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) and addendums.
  • Participating in the development and implementation of the Safe School Plan to ensure a secure learning environment.
  • Performing other duties as assigned to meet the evolving needs of the Museum School community.
