Camp Red Cedar boasts 57 acres of woods, meadows, trails, a 10-acre lake and sandy beach.  Each year the camp serves hundreds of kids through our summer camps, riding programs, horse shows and rentals.

Camp Red Cedar’s mission is to encourage children and adults with disabilities to move beyond their boundaries through recreational activities, outdoor education, creative arts and interaction with horses, in an integrated environment, serving people of all abilities.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director and team members that consist of full-time year-round staff, seasonal camp staff, equestrian staff, Camp Red Cedar (CRC) committee members, and community organizations. The Assistant Director will help the Director to maintain the programs, horses, grounds, and facilities to meet all standards of the CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH, International), and service standards under Family and Social Services Administration, disability services of Indiana.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize, plan, and supervise Camp Red Cedar’s summer programs, employees, and volunteer recruitment.
  • Assume leadership of CRC in the absence of the Director.
  • Provide vision and leadership for the department in planning and implementing community and facility-based, age-appropriate activities for participants.
  • Supervise and mentor seasonal and year-around staff
  • Conduct regularly scheduled required training and staff meetings.
  • Ensure proper group sizes by establishing and maintaining a daily scheduling system.
  • Work with community partners to organize inclusive events and programming.
  • Recruit applicants through newspapers, job fairs, relationships with schools, etc.; represent Camp Red Cedar at Job Fairs, Campus Career Fairs, and other recruitment and networking activities.
  • Coordinate the flow of candidates through the hiring and orientation process including screening internal and external applicants by reviewing applications/resumes, conducting interviews, background and reference checks; coordinating second interviews with hiring authority; offering positions to successful candidates, and scheduling orientation.
  • Oversee the processing and orientation of individual volunteers 
  • Counsel employees and managers on human resource-related issues
  • Maintain current information on job openings for assigned programs. Prepare all advertising for employment opportunities in assigned programs.
  • Follow and enforce compliance and safety policies with all federal and state regulations
  • Coordinate and/or complete seasonal activity schedules and schedule special programming for each season.
  • Track data related to Outcome Measurement Departmental goals.
  • Implement all protocols for participants, including but not limited to, high-risk plans, dining plans, seizure management plans, and personal care schedules.
  • Complete director-requested purchases through established vendors, and submit purchase orders.
  • Fiscal monitoring of the billable programs which includes monitoring reports related to time entry and proper billing of time.
  • Attend all training sessions and facility improvement days, including special events.
  • Promote and market the program by establishing professional relationships with case managers and other potential customers.
  • Develop and distribute customer satisfaction surveys for all programming areas.
  • Be a good role model for students, staff, co-workers, and volunteers.
  • Assist with The Lodge at Camp Red Cedar rentals as requested or required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or BA in a related field.
  • Professional work experience in a managerial or responsible supervisory position (camp setting)
  • 2 – 3 years management experience
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Demonstrates good communication and organizational skills, sound judgment, initiative, dependability, responsibility, flexibility, honesty, and maturity.
  • Valid driver’s license.
