The Assistant Director plays a pivotal role in fostering inclusivity and raising awareness of equity and social justice issues within the school community. They should possess a deep commitment and expertise in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work, aiming to cultivate a school environment where everyone feels respected, valued, and empowered.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Equity and Inclusion to craft and execute a comprehensive DEI strategic plan aligned with the school's mission.
  • Engage with faculty, staff, students, and families to develop and deliver DEI training programs and workshops.
  • Provide guidance to educators in integrating diverse perspectives and culturally responsive teaching methods into the curriculum.
  • Cultivate partnerships with external organizations to enrich the school community's understanding of diverse experiences and best practices.
  • Contribute to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff, ensuring equitable hiring practices.
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of DEI initiatives through data collection and analysis.
  • Act as a resource for DEI-related matters for students, families, and staff.
  • Stay updated on DEI research and trends, sharing relevant insights with the school community.
  • Address bias incidents and foster an environment conducive to open dialogue and diverse viewpoints.
  • Collaborate with affinity group leaders and support student diversity councils.
  • Participate in divisional leadership and coordinate DEI-related events and initiatives across the school.
  • Teach a class and lead a student advisory group as determined by school leadership.
  • Support the professional growth of colleagues in the Equity and Inclusion Division.
  • Contribute to the development of DEI scope and sequence across grade levels.
  • Advance school-wide diversity initiatives in various areas, including admissions, curriculum, and extracurriculars.
  • Coordinate and assist in planning DEI-related events and conferences.
  • Foster engagement with students of diverse identities and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional growth in DEI work.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience and knowledge of DEI issues within an educational setting, preferably in K-12 independent schools.
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices and the ability to support their implementation.
  • Strong communication skills to facilitate difficult conversations and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical abilities to manage multiple projects and utilize data effectively.
  • Experience in designing and delivering DEI training and professional development sessions.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and self-reflection in DEI work.
  • Collaborative approach with a knack for building positive relationships.
  • Flexibility, humor, and warmth in engaging with others.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration.
