VP of Engineering

About the Role:

We are a fast-growing startup looking for our first VP of Engineering to help scale our engineering team and take ownership of our technical strategy. As the VP of Engineering, you will lead a small but talented team of six engineers with the goal of doubling and tripling the team over the next two years. This role is critical in shaping our company’s technical foundation, building a strong engineering culture, and managing the evolution of our product and infrastructure.

 Key Responsibilities:

- System Architecture & DBA: Architect, maintain, and scale our systems and databases as we grow.

- DevOps Management: Implement and oversee DevOps best practices, ensuring smooth deployment and operation of our services.

- Team Building & Leadership: Hire, mentor, and develop engineers, with a focus on growing the team. Conduct regular 1-on-1s and build a culture of collaboration and excellence.

- Contractor Management: Manage external contractors as needed to complement internal resources and scale effectively.

- Cost Management: Keep a close eye on system and cloud costs, optimizing for both performance and efficiency as the company scales.

- Compliance & Security: Ensure the company’s infrastructure is secure and complies with relevant industry standards.

What You’ll Do in Your First 90 Days:

 - 30 Days: Get to know the team, systems, and processes. Develop a hiring and team restructuring plan to support immediate and future growth needs.

- 60 Days: Deliver a technical architecture and debt assessment, along with a clear plan to address both. Begin executing hiring and team adjustments.

- 90 Days: Start executing on technical improvements, building out architecture, and addressing tech debt while preparing the team for rapid scaling.

Qualifications:

- Proven experience scaling engineering teams from small to mid-size in a startup environment.

- Strong background in system architecture, database administration, and DevOps.

- Leadership experience in building, mentoring, and managing small teams with a hands-on approach.

- Ability to manage costs effectively while balancing performance and scaling needs.

- Experience in fast-paced environments, with a focus on both execution and long-term strategy.
