Position Description

The Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine is seeking an AP board certified Liver/GI Pathologist to join the Liver/GI pathology section. The section is an established, fully sub-specialized pathology service. The Department currently receives approximately 70,000 non-cytology surgical pathology specimens per year. The Liver/GI service is the largest subspecialty service within the Division of Anatomic and Molecular Pathology and receives ~21,000 cases annually including ~1,700 liver cases and ~150 pancreas cases annually.

The Department ( The Department of Pathology & Immunology excels in basic and clinical research as well as delivery of outstanding pathology and laboratory medicine services. In 2015, the department moved to a new facility at the center of the Washington University Medical Campus. The Department provides a supportive environment for research and teaching. Across nine AP fellowships, six CP fellowships, and the core residency program, there are a total of 66 GME trainees. Liver/GI pathology comprises one of the AP fellowships. 

The School ( News & World Report ranks WUSM among the top 15 in the nation. Eighteen Nobel laureates have trained or carried out research here. Thirteen faculty members are fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, and 24 belong to the Academy of Medicine. WUSM is second among medical schools in grants received from the National Institutes of Health ($575 million in 2021).

Basic Qualifications

Education and Expectations: Candidates must possess or degrees as well as Board certification for Anatomic and/or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology through the American Board of Pathology. Fellowship training in Liver/GI is required. Demonstration of competence in independently managing complex Liver/GI cases and academic productivity in the area of Liver/GI pathology is required. Expertise and academic track record in the area of liver pathology is particularly desirable.

The candidate is expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as interest in education of medical students and post-graduate trainees, residents, fellows, and, as appropriate, research fellows and post-docs. Candidates with a range of career paths (ranging from a focus on clinical service and clinical research, to translational research, to basic science research) are encouraged to apply.
