Summary

The Central Sterile Technician assumes responsibility for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies, instrumentation and equipment dispensed to all surgical locations and other house-wide areas. Also participates in receipt, storage and distribution of supplies needed for Operating Room case carts as well as single supplies needed by patient care departments throughout the facility.


Requirements

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • One year experience in a Central Sterile Processing department.
  • Graduation from an accredited CSS training program. (Requirement only applies when waiting to become certified)

    • Certification in Central Sterile Processing or Certified within 1 year of hire

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to utilize one or more of the following:
      • Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel
      • Microsoft Outlook
      • Meditech (if applicable to position)
      • Epic (if applicable to position)
      • Performance Manager/NetLearning
    • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
    • Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
    • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public.
    • Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team with other employees.
    • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Must be willing to seek out new principles and methods, and be willing to incorporate them into CSS practices.
    • Must be conscientious in regard to technical and detailed procedures.
    • Must possess a thorough knowledge of medical terminology and nomenclature of sterilization procedures and techniques.
    • Must be able to work successfully with computers and instrument management systems.
