HVAC Mechanic I

The (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) HVAC Mechanic I installs, services, and repairs environmental-control systems, utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout.

This is a union contract position which requires on-site presence at the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) facility at Research Triangle Park (RTP) in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.

Responsibilities

Mounts compressors and condenser units on platforms or floors, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications. Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment. Installs evaporator units in chassis or in air-duct systems using hand tools. Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment. Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant. Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit. Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source. Installs air and water filters in completed installation. Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure. Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure proper operation. Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and-water solution. Wraps pipes in installation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands as applicable to minor repairs. Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units. Performs heating and cooling water treatment checking for target pH and chemical concentration levels as determined by a heating and cooling water chemist and adjusts treatment chemical level as required. Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and other technical documents. Receive and complete work orders in a timely and efficient manner, completing forms and checklists manually on paper, and digitally. Provides troubleshooting support and mentorship or guidance to technician teammates. Ascends ladders and lifts, as necessary. Inspect jobs upon completion to ensure areas are clean. Performs all other duties as required.

Requirements

1+ year experience in installation, programming, and troubleshooting of Building Automation Control Systems (BAS) Possess own position-related hand tools for use on job site. 18+ years of age or older High School Diploma or equivalent Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.  Must have transportation to and from Company office in Durham, NC. Possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License Be able to lift fifty to sixty pounds (50 - 60 lbs.) Be able to work overtime, nights, and weekends as scheduled.  Successful results of pre-employment screenings, including federal background check, MVR, and drug screen  Ability to obtain facility/site security and access credentials. Be able to work alternate shifts, overtime, nights, and weekends as scheduled or as needed. Comply with company drug and alcohol policy.  Be authorized to work in the US or will be authorized by the successful candidate’s start date.
