About Our Job

The Denver Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Division is currently seeking a Permit Review Technician II to undertake the following key responsibilities: reviewing permit applications, conducting plan reviews, interpreting Fire Codes and regulations, issuing operational permits, responding to inquiries, maintaining records, conducting research, assisting with code enforcement and other related functions.

The Fire Prevention Division ensures Fire and Building Code compliance through comprehensive plan review and inspections. Additionally, it plays a vital role in public safety by researching and testing new methods and technologies, developing detailed technical reports, and recommending on the Fire Code amendments based on thorough research and justification.

This position entails frequent interaction with Fire personnel and personnel from other city agencies. Therefore, a strong customer-service orientation and effective communication skills are essential.

Location: This position will be located at the Denver Fire Headquarters at 745 W. Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80204.

Job responsibilities include:

Works directly with contractors, property owners, and business owners to review and approve routine permit requests and construction project plans, ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and regulations for the issuance of fire/building construction and operational permits.

Determines the nature of permit requests to evaluate the permit type, such as a simple permit (issued within the same day) or a complex permit review requiring authorization from a professional planner or engineer, and guides customers through the approval process accordingly.

Review construction plans for building permits and system designs for fire protection permits, seeking consultation with engineers and other professional and technical experts for complex permitting requests, unusual designs, and issues of conformity and compliance.

Prepares documents and reports on issued permits and total revenues for management review and approval while maintaining records, files, and mapping systems.

Processes address change requests, including updating retired addresses for demolitions and merging units, and collaborates with inspectors to conduct field inspections for address verification and location confirmation.

Reviews and approves various operational permit requests, that may include permits for flammable materials, hazardous substances, and special events.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Please note that individual positions may not encompass all listed duties, with allocation determined based on the time spent performing essential responsibilities.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

Previous experience as a Permit Review Technician, demonstrating proficiency in permit review processes and related duties.

Strong technical knowledge of the International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), and NFPA Standards, with the ability to interpret and apply these codes effectively.

Familiarity with various topics covered in the International Fire Code (IFC), including fire prevention, fire protection systems, occupancy classifications, and hazardous materials management.

Exceptional customer service skills, with a proven ability to interact professionally and courteously with diverse stakeholders, including contractors, property owners, and government officials.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling clear and concise communication of complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and compliance when reviewing permit applications, construction plans, and related documents.

Proficiency with Accela or similar permit tracking and management software, facilitating efficient processing and tracking of permit applications and related data.

Flexible and solution-oriented approach to permit review and problem-solving, adapting to changing priorities and finding creative solutions to challenges as they arise.

Certification as a Fire Inspector and/or Permit Review Technician by recognized authorities such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or International Code Council (ICC). If not already certified, certification is required within 6 months of employment.

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

Experience Requirement: Four (4) years of experience reviewing requests and issuing permits for routine public right-of-way requests, non-technical construction projects with regard to building and zoning permits, or enforcement of building and zoning codes and regulations.

Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

By position, requires a Traffic Control Technician Certification at the time of application. 

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
