SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Executive Director will serve as a key strategic leader in the creation and execution of comprehensive and strategic stewardship and communications plans that elevate engagement opportunities with key prospect and donor audiences. The Executive Director will design and implement, or enhance, premium engagement experiences through personalized stewardship reporting, events, regional activities, and both on-campus and virtual activities. Direct alignment with communication planning and execution will allow the team to increase name recognition and branding, with the ultimate goal of highlighting and increasing philanthropic impact. The Executive Director will lead and manage Stewardship and Donor Relations as well as Development Communications and will oversee planning, advising, and facilitating of the highest and most tailored engagement activities in direct alignment with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland Medical Center, and in partnership with the University of Maryland Baltimore. Efforts with multiple prospect and donor bases will promote and increase financial philanthropic investment in top fundraising priorities and align work across the entire academic medical center enterprise. The Executive Director will manage a team of three with plans to grow and build the team.

SCOPE OF ROLE

This position will include a significant managerial function overseeing Stewardship & Donor Relations (SDR) as well as Development Communications on the University of Maryland Medicine Philanthropy (UMMP) team. The team member will be expected to be a subject matter expert in their space. They will achieve objectives through coordinated efforts of others by managing recruitment, engagement, performance, and development of employees. They will develop, implement, and manage goals and priorities. They will participate in strategic planning, as well as determine and enforce processes, practices, and/or policies on their team, in support of the larger UMMP team. They will manage operations, workflow, projects, and/or systems that have strategic impact in their area of expertise. They will oversee direction of two functional areas, including SDR and Development Communications. They will oversee and execute strategic goals and objectives that directly align with our comprehensive academic medical center enterprise, including the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center campus. They will have authority to make managerial decisions within areas of responsibility, will seek feedback from leadership where appropriate, and inform leadership of results. They will provide transformational advice and support to leadership on the academic medical center enterprise’s long-term strategic vision. Their decisions and the quality of execution will have significant impact on the UMMP team’s success and progress of work. PRIMARY DUTIES

Plan strategically to enhance stewardship, donor relations, and development communications that will achieve the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland Medical Center’s overlapping and aligned philanthropic objectives.
Oversee comprehensive donor support services and stewardship strategies that appropriately and consistently promotes interaction with and recognition of donors at all levels.
Oversee an integrated donor engagement program that encompasses donor acknowledgments, endowment status reports, communications, and events across the enterprise.
Support executive decision making by overseeing creation of planned and ad hoc reports and identifying trends. Develop communication plans to ensure a continued pipeline of information is distributed to internal and external audiences.
Oversee the Development Communications internal creative team members to produce high quality stewardship and communication deliverables through digital and printed collateral as well as social media and other online platforms and emerging technology.
Review prepared reports, such as gift reporting, fund reports, assessment dollar collected, endowment expenditures. Partner with UMMP Development Operations team members to identify trends and variances to address.
Support the development of memberships of giving clubs, committees and affiliations and maintain up-to-date list of donors and prospect in the philanthropy database.
Oversee the stewardship activities for the school and medical center, and ensure major, principal, and planned giving donors have individualized, specialized plans of acknowledgement, including invitation to appropriate events.
Provide direction to and execute marketing strategies, programs, and communications to donors.
Lead philanthropy communications team with a focus on building a culture of philanthropy and generating ongoing and long-term support for UMMP’s mission.
Oversee maintenance and improvement of work-flow processes, including project management and communications calendaring.
Support a culture of excellence and ensure a positive donor experience by continually optimizing communications activities (research, analytics, assessing marketing performance).
Partner with annual giving and alumni solicitation team members on activities that include cultivating relationships with all donor bases, including but not limited to alumni, grateful patients, faculty, staff, and friends.
Partner with events team members to ensure donor engagement is a priority in event planning and execution, as well as a key performance indicator in event success.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree. Master's preferred.

Experience: Eight years progressively building a background in the various philanthropic functions, preferably in higher education, including at least five years in donor data maintenance, donor support and stewardship, gift administration or advancement services.

Supervisory Experience: Four years in direct management or leadership role.

Other: Financial disclosure reporting required by the State of Maryland Ethics Commission.
