Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Pre-Professional Advising/Academic Support Initiatives, the Associate Director is responsible for managing the Peer Academic Skills Consultant Program and the Tutoring Program, as well as the development, implementation, and coordination of other academic support initiatives and programming. The Associate Director liaises with advising deans, faculty, and other constituencies regarding academic support for individual students. The Associate Director works directly with the staff of the Academic Success Programs (ASP) to meet the tutoring needs of students in the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and the National Opportunity Program (NOP).

THIS IS A PARTIALLY GRANT-FUNDED POSITION. CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT UPON CONTINUED SUFFICIENT FUNDING.

Responsibilities

Leads the orientation and education of students, staff and faculty about Academic Support resources and processes, this includes presenting in larger groups, representing services at resource fairs, and talking with faculty, staff, and parents about the resources. Works on the development and administration of assessment tools to evaluate the programs, creates semester reports about usage of tutoring and consulting services to inform decisions about future offerings and staffing. Directs tutor and peer consultant recruitment, makes hiring decisions, and processes payroll. Manages the evaluation and ongoing supervision for tutors and consultants, including terminating student employees when necessary. Develops, refines, and facilitates tutor and consultant training and other professional development opportunities for tutors and peer consultants. Designs master tutor and peer consultant schedule in tutor software to ensure full coverage. Receives and approves tutoring and consultant requests, monitors demands, and makes decisions about increasing staffing. Maintains tutor scheduling software, compiles usage data reports, troubleshoots difficulties, and trains new users  Leads the initiative of connecting students who were interested in forming study groups and facilitates this matching on an ongoing basis. Develops and implements various academic support programming initiatives. Duties include supervising peer consultants in developing content, recruiting speakers, managing logistics, and marketing, compiling program attendance, performing assessments and evaluations, and maintaining program archives. Manages marketing and communications for CSA Academic Support, answers general questions regarding activities related to academic support, and coordinates with academic departments to recruit tutors and to advertise academic support offered outside of the CSA Tutoring program. Associate Director manages and publicizes events and workshops while coordinating other forms of outreach to students and the community at large. Attends the ASP semester general meetings to promote the academic support services, and is involved in training peer tutors who support ASP Summer Bridge Program Develops programming and website content for academic skill building including time management, study skills, effective note-taking, etc. Co-teaches Getting Things Done, a weekly time management support group with another member of the Center for Student Advising. Updates and distributes the Academic Action Self-Assessment for students on academic probation (supporting effective advising conversations) Represents Columbia at the Ivy + Learning Services Roundtable annual meeting, sharing best practices with our peer institutions. Participates in other CSA committees Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent required.

Minimum of three to five years of relevant experience required (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

Computer proficiency required. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.

The candidate should also possess both creativity and flexibility.

Professionalism in handling a wide range of tasks, and attention to detail is essential.

Capacity to work independently on multiple projects and to prioritize appropriately is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred. Experience with databases and website maintenance highly desirable. Knowledge of advanced tasks in the MS Office Suite, specifically Excel, is preferred. Experience in learning services and supervising others is preferred.
