POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Behavioral Health Manager-Therapy (BHM-T) is responsible for operationalizing Behavioral Health Therapy across multiple IHA practices. In general, Behavioral Health Therapy includes assessing patients for mental illness and providing psychotherapy. The main responsibilities of the BHM-T include development and coordination of workforce, scaling behavioral health therapy to additional medical offices, determining scope and roles and assuring superb patient care within behavioral health therapy roles. The BHM-T maintains patient care as a portion of their FTE allotment as needed.

For the purposes of this job description, Behavioral Health Therapists include Clinical Social Workers providing psychotherapy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Supervisory and Management Responsibilities:

Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates employees in Behavioral Health Collaborative Care. Coaches for performance and promotes direct reports when earned. Supervises the work of assigned staff including the monitoring of staff competencies, orientation of new assignments, developing goals and objectives, conducting annual performance appraisal and the utilization of performance resolution process, up to and including termination. Provides mentoring and acts as a preceptor for Behavioral Health Therapists. Regularly assesses the performance of Behavioral Health Therapy staff via documentation audits, live service observations and other performance management tools. Monitors and maintains staff productivity and acts as a key resource to the Behavioral Health therapy team to maximize resource utilization (staff and equipment). Provides reports necessary to monitor/track operational efficiency and effectiveness of operational processes. Tracks appropriate outcomes of behavioral health therapy. Ensures quality outcomes and Behavioral Health Therapist best practices, including development of program evaluation elements. Assists the Behavioral Health leadership team in the development and implementation of strategic and operational goals and plans. Leads Behavioral Health Therapist team meetings and small group discussions, facilitates networking and sharing of case studies. Contributes to ongoing Behavioral Health Therapist curriculum development with ongoing development of education, resources and tools. Ensures all direct reports are oriented to their department and job and provided with appropriate training, development and continuing education. Promotes teamwork and a positive working environment for staff. Assesses appropriate caseload of behavioral health therapists and adjusts as appropriate. Provides clinical supervision to limited license clinicians, as permitted by discipline, on the behavioral health therapy team. Leads quality efforts related to Behavioral Health Therapist use of the Electronic Medical Record, including developing and maintaining smartphrases and auditing workflow. Contributes to the building of a financial model for Behavioral Health Therapy. Attends, participates in and presents at internal and external customer events. Assumes additional responsibilities and performs work as required.

Behavioral Health Therapist Responsibilities:

Evaluates patients and families and makes recommendations regarding their behavioral and emotional health. Uses validated screening tools for assessment and symptom monitoring. Creates treatment plans that reflect patient’s values, goals and health. Incorporates feedback from patient’s treatment team and support system in the treatment plan. Provides group and individual therapy to patients and families, using evidence-based approaches. Provides crisis and short-term intervention as well as assists families in understanding the implications and complexities of the psychological situation and provides treatment or assists in securing appropriate referral. Completes patient-related documentation and communicates relevant clinical information to both the patient and referring provider(s) in accordance with department and agency policy in a timely fashion, and with content that is focused on relevant issues. Understands or seeks supervision regarding legal issues that affect treatment, including but not limited to child custody, divorce laws, child/adult abuse, duty to warn, recipient rights policies and procedures, alternative treatment orders (ATOs), and the commitment process for hospitalization. May supervise student interns from own discipline/provide case-specific supervision of student interns of any discipline. Maintains a productivity rate in accordance with department and/or agency policy. Sustains effective relationships with a multidisciplinary team. Protects the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA. Participates in program evaluation and quality initiatives. Contributes and joins in office, department and community education activities addressing prevention and treatment of mental health conditions Assumes additional responsibilities and performs work within position licensure, as required.

Maintains strict patient and employee confidentiality in compliance with IHA and HIPAA guidelines. Uses resources efficiently. Maintains appropriate licensure/certification and continuing education credentials, participates in available learning opportunities.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Master of Social Work , Counseling, Psychology or related field

CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE:

Valid, applicable license to provide mental health services in the State of Michigan.

State specialty certification (such as Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor or Infant Mental Health Specialist) may be required for some positions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 5 years’ social work experience. Working knowledge of mental health disorders and evidence-based interventions for mental health disorders. Experience with adult and/or pediatric patients in team-based care setting. Experience as a participant in continuous quality improvement and previous supervisory/management or program development experience preferred. Experience managing a clinical team preferred.

Knowledge of the compliance aspects of clinical care and patient privacy and best practices in medical office operations. Ability to drive to other office/practice sites and meeting and training locations. Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

Physical activity that often requires keyboarding, phone work and charting. Physical activity that often requires extensive time working on a computer. Physical activity that may require walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling and/or twisting. Physical activity that may require lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.

MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:

This job operates in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital/clinic. Employees will be working where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids are also present. Exposure to sharps, x-rays, patients' conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases is possible. This position requires significant interaction with people (many of whom are scared, hurt and/or ill) which can be stressful and result in competing priorities.
