A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Business & Data Services Librarian provides specialized research consultation, instruction, and collection development for all undergraduate and graduate programs in the Leavey School of Business, including Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management & Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Information Systems and Analytics. Working collaboratively with subject librarians, this role also helps to design and deliver data services - including data literacy instruction - for disciplinary departments across campus. In addition to these subject and functional emphases, the Business & Data Services Librarian participates in and supports first year writing classes, general research services, and library outreach initiatives. This position reports to the Head of Research, Outreach, and Inclusion.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching, Research Consultation, Outreach and Assessment (50%)

Serves as liaison to all academic departments and institutes in the Leavey School of Business.Collaborates with faculty to design and deliver library instruction that best meets the learning objectives of courses in the Leavey School of Business.Creates instructional support tools, such as online research guides, tutorials, and other digital learning objects.Engages with Business faculty and students (undergraduate and graduate) to support scholarship and research and provide in-depth specialized reference assistanceCollaborates with other subject librarians and library leaders to assess instructional programs and services.Collaborates with faculty to design and deliver library instruction that best meets the learning objectives of Critical Thinking and Writing courses for first-year students.Provides in-person and virtual research assistance and consultations to students, faculty, staff, and visitorsSupports and participates in outreach activities and events organized by Research, Outreach & Inclusion, and the University Library as a whole.

Collection Development and Management (20%)

Manages the Library’s electronic and print collections related to the position’s subject areas, in partnership with the Head of Electronic Resources & Serials and the Assistant Dean, Collections and Scholarly CommunicationsIdentifies new monograph titles and/or updates order profiles to facilitate the adding of monographic materials to the collectionCollaborates with the Collections & Access Group and relevant library leads to identify and trial new electronic resourcesSupports collection management in subject areas by engaging with and interpreting data to make decisions related to holdings (such as deselections and cancellations).Participates in broader discussions related to library collections in the Collections & Access Group.

Data Services (20%)

In collaboration with the Head of Research, Outreach, and Inclusion, design, develop and implement library-wide data services, including supporting data literacy instruction, for the campus communitySupports students, staff and faculty to discover and explore data sets in support of their projectsConsults with faculty on the design, implementation and evaluation of data management plansMaintain current knowledge of data literacy and data management principlesCollaborates with campus partners on initiatives to support the data needs of faculty and other researchers on campus

Service and Scholarship (10%)

Serves on/or chairs University and University Library committees, working groups, and task forces.Participates in local, state, regional, and national/international professional and scholarly societies and organizations.Conducts research related to library science and/or another appropriate academic discipline; presents results at conferences and/or through publication.

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality of services.Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.Maintains contact with customers, stakeholders and patrons and solicits feedback for improved services.Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflowPrepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Receives Work Direction

Reports to and is supervised by the Head of Research, Outreach & InclusionMay receive work orientation, guidance, or training from University Library colleagues within and external to the Research, Outreach & Inclusion department

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. Working days are Monday through Friday. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support department and unit services, programs, and events.

Required

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited (or equivalent) library science or information science programAt least two years experience providing research and instructional services in a library.Ability to develop and deliver dynamic instruction on discovering, evaluating, and using information resources.Demonstrated competency in both in person and online reference work.Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, collaboration, and presentation skills for communicating with a wide range of constituencies.

Education

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited (or equivalent) program in library science and/or information science

Appointment level and Hiring Salary Ranges

This position is included in the Academic Staff Librarian category. The specific level at which an appointment is made is determined by the successful candidate’s level of experience and professional accomplishment. Minimum qualifications for those ranks are:

Senior Assistant Librarian (salary grade 10): at least two years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for an early-career librarian.

Associate Librarian (salary grade 11): at least five years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework or advanced degrees, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for a mid-career librarian.

Librarian (salary grade 12): at least seven years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework or advanced degrees, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for a senior librarian.
