Job Summary

The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships is part of Salt Lake Community College (SLCC)’s Enrollment Management team dedicated to helping students find the resources to help pay for their education through federal, state, institutional, and private funding.

The Financial Aid Advisor is responsible for counseling students, parents, and other staff about the different financial aid options available, the requirements, and the steps in the financial aid process. The advisor will participate in on-campus and off-campus outreach events and provide counseling through in-person, virtual, phone calls, and email correspondence. Due to the diverse student population at SLCC, effective verbal and written communication with individuals from various backgrounds is essential. The advisor will use their knowledge of financial aid regulations to determine student eligibility during weekly Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals meeting. This position will participate as appropriate in systems and procedure implementations and carry out assignments following the department’s overall objectives. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Review weekly, monthly, and other reports to ensure accurate processing of students’ aid. Reports include satisfactory progress, dependency overrides, Multiple Reporting Records, Pell adjustment, Return of Title IV calculations, non-completion of classes, changes in residency status, and others. Advise students regarding financial aid eligibility, financial aid status, availability of funding, and completion of financial aid applications. Provide information on available federal, state and institutional scholarship funds, eligibility criteria, and application procedures. Revise existing awards to reflect changes in eligibility or allowable budget adjustments. Exercise professional judgement in adjusting a student’s application to accommodate documented, qualifying special circumstances. Review awards to make necessary changes to financial aid based upon the student’s eligibility. Meet with students who may be required to sign contracts for Satisfactory Academic Progress and Continuation of Funding. Create and conduct presentations concerning financial aid to groups, both on- and off-campus. Presentations may be required on evenings and weekends. Complete all requests for consortium agreements. Work with other institutions to share the student’s consortium paperwork. Report student’s course completion and grades completed at SLCC and compliance with satisfactory progress policies. Collaborate with other departments across campus in order to resolve issues, provide assistance to students, and/or administer the regulations governing Title IV funding in the awarding/processing of financial aid. Other duties as assigned. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree. Zero (0) to two (2) years in financial aid or directly related experience. Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement. Preferred Qualifications Spanish language skills. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Maintains working knowledge of federal financial aid programs and supporting regulations. Provides outstanding customer service to students, parents, faculty, and staff. Ability to interpret and explain complex regulatory information related to the financial aid process. Demonstrates excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment. Highly motivated team player with ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all levels within and external to the college and ability to work independently. Able to be flexible and supportive, while assimilating change positively and proactively in rapid growth environment. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities. Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties Assist in office by answering phones, working at front desk or handling paperwork.
