About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):

The Indiana Department of Revenue team has over 700 staff members from 13 locations across Indiana. Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $67,314. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
 

Role Overview:

The Economist is an integral part of the Tax Policy Division. The Economist performs advanced research and analysis to assist in forecasting and planning for state fiscal conditions and policy. Leading up to each legislative session, the Economist will be responsible for conducting comprehensive fiscal and economic analysis on internal and external legislative proposals and filed bills, identifying fiscal consequences and taxpayer impact. This will provide DOR with a better understanding of impacts while providing credibility when presenting the results to external stakeholders, including the Legislative Services Agency, State Budget Agency, and General Assembly.
 

A Day in the Life:

Essential duties include:

Complete comprehensive fiscal and economic analysis on internal and external legislative proposals and filed bills, identifying fiscal consequences and taxpayer impact.  Analyze department-proposed regulations, federal legislation, economic policies, and fiscal policies that affect the state and/or taxing initiatives. Provide professional expertise in economic analysis and input into the development, implementation, and/or evaluation of the department's major programs, strategies, and policies.  Liaise with the Finance, Audit, and Enforcement departments to analyze fiscal, economic, tax district, and auditing data.  Prepare comprehensive research, analyses, plans, and reports on ad-hoc topics. Coordinate and report financial data with agencies in the executive and legislative branches. Participate in statewide economic forecasting with other state governmental agencies as requested.

What You'll Need for Success:

Credentials:

Master's degree or higher in Economics, Statistics, Analytics, or related discipline, OR Bachelor's degree in Economics, Statistics, Analytics, or related discipline with 3+ years of experience in a similar role.

Additional Qualifications:

Excellent critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address issues and problems. Detail-oriented with the capacity to assess essential project data and analysis. Extensive knowledge of economic and accounting principles, analysis, and reporting. Self-motivated, responsible, and ethical in daily work.
