Under the direction of the Department Administrator, the Athletic Trainer provides day-to-day coverage in the PM&R physician clinic, with specialty practice and training in concussions for athletes and the general public. Assists with program coordination, development, marketing, and educational outreach for PM&R concussion programs. Collaborates with Program Manager (Medical Director) and Departmental leadership in program development, clinical operations, program refinement, and program expansion. Serves as liaison between the concussion clinical practice and concussion clinical research, interacting with research faculty and staff. Works closely with Concussion Program Nurse Navigator to triage concussion patients and support access to timely PM&R intervention.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Athletic Trainer
National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Certification
Current CPR Certification

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current license in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Athletic Trainer
Current NATA Certification
Current CPR Certification

Experience REQUIRED: Two (2) years previous experience in athletic training setting

Experience PREFERRED
One (1) year clinic-based physician care clinic experience
Experience in marketing, outreach and concussion programs

Education/training REQUIRED:
Master’s Degree in health-related field from an accredited program
One (1) year residency in ATC physician extender program

Education/training PREFERRED: Experience in marketing, outreach, and concussion programs.

Independent action(s) required:
Demonstrate an ability to perform the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, assessment, treatment, (including first aide) and reconditioning as set forth by the NATA Board of Certification. Demonstrate contemporary knowledge of concussion assessment, management, prevention and treatment and possess the ability to assess data and research reflective of the athlete’s status and interpret the appropriate information. Demonstrate proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment. Carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event physician. Maintain NATA and CPR certification in accordance with those respective institutions. Cover assigned, physician clinic, and related events under the supervision of the Program Manager (Medical Director). Demonstrate knowledge of the principals of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the athlete’s status and interpret the appropriate information.

Additional position requirements:

Position is primarily weekday work but may be expected to work into the evening, or weekend.

This job safely administers the prescribed medications of topical corticosteroids, topical lidocaine, or other Schedule VI topical drugs; oxygen for use in emergency situations; epinephrine for use in emergency cases of anaphylactic shock; and naloxone or other opioid antagonist for overdose reversal.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Must be able to adjust and adapt to changing conditions as the PM&R is a fast-paced medical practice environment. Must be able to handle high amounts of stress. Must be able to assist with or transfer athletes and those in the general population of various weight/heights. Must be able to push carts with athletic equipment on them. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances Must demonstrate ability to communicate to give adequate directions and instructions to athletes. Must be able to carry training kit and coolers for long distances.
