Genetic Counseling Research Rotation Internship

Durham, United States RTI International Full time
Overview

RTI International seeks a prospect for the Genetic Counseling Research Rotation Internship within the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) unit.

The Genomics and Translational Research Center team conducts research that traverses the research spectrum from basic discovery to translation: illuminating causes, consequences, and interventions for human disease to advance public health and well-being of affected individuals and their caregivers.

Throughout their non-clinical rotation, the genetic counseling student will spend time with the RTI genetic counselors working in various projects. The student will have the opportunity to tour the RTI campus, on-campus NBS laboratory, and attend relevant meetings. There may be opportunities to participate in qualitative research such as focus groups or interviews. The student will learn about curation and interpretation of genetic variants. There may be opportunities to observe the return of NBS results to participants and participate in psychosocial follow-up of those who received positive NBS results. The student will also learn about the regulatory process and IRB. The culmination of the rotation will be the development and presentation of a rotation project.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize the roles of genetic counselors working in a research setting. Define the objectives, methods and/or results of two translational research projects. Identify and utilize tools for genomic variant interpretation to inform return of NBS results. Strengthen psychosocial counseling skills through observation of NBS return of results calls. Have a basic understanding of qualitative research methods. Describe the development of IRB protocols and the process for IRB review.
Responsibilities

Attend observational experiences with RTI staff and keep a log of completed experiences or assignments. Communicate and collaborate with RTI genetic counselors to achieve learning objectives. Work independently on a rotation project.

RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. We are committed to developing the future workforce by encouraging interns to explore various career paths in a nonprofit research institute setting that values diversity and inclusion. Through this program, interns will be exposed to RTI's open and educational culture; support RTI's mission to improve the human condition; and build upon their career goals.

Additional Information

This hybrid academic credit with stipend internship will take place from October 2024 through November 2024. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 16-24 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday.
