Job Description


Piedmont Global Language Solutions (PGLS) serves the DC Metro community and the world with a full range of language services such as language instruction, interpretation, translation, transcription, cultural sensitivity training, and localization. Our network of language professionals provides expertise in more than 200 languages, including regional dialects.

PGLS is looking for experienced language instructor to provide language training, mentoring and testing for multiple languages at the School of Language Studies at the Department of State's Foreign Language Institute (FSI).

PGLS is actively recruiting for the pool for the following languages: Albanian, Arabic, Amharic, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Burmese, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Farsi, Finnish, German, Georgian, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Haitian Creole, Hausa, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Khmer (Cambodian), Korean, Kurdish (Kurmanji and Sorani), Kyrgyz, Lao, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Mongolian, Montenegrin, Nepali, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian and European), Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog (Filipino), Tajiki, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Turkmen, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, and Vietnamese.

Duties

• Plan and conduct group language classes in a small group setting, onsite in Arlington, VA.
• Use established materials and work collaboratively with the LTS and other instructors in the team on training and/or testing matters.
• Assess students’ progress and provide feedback; consult with LTS and adapt teaching techniques to the students’ individual needs.
• Conduct informal and formal progress assessments to evaluate students’ progress.
• Provide a respectful, student center environment and provide encouragement and constructive feedback.
• Maintain an online classroom environment through the Foreign Service Institute’s Learning Management System.
• With pre-approval by COR plan and/or participate in non-classroom activities in the Washington DC area.

Requirements

    Required qualifications

• Educated native or near native speaker of the target language (preferably Level 4 or higher on ILR scale).
• Cultural background of the specific country or geographic area, by being raised or educated in the said country or by living in an enclave or heritage community in another country.
• BA/BS, MA/MS or Ph.D. or foreign equivalent degree(s) in any field.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching the respective foreign language to adult learners (2 or more students).
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching the respective foreign language with proficiency-based or task-based curricula.
• A minimum of one (1) year administering proficiency-based assessments (serving as an FSI tester or rater, administering DLPT or OPI exams, administering task-based quizzes or weekly assessments).
• Knowledge of basic computer skills: e.g email, Microsoft Office Suite, online meeting software (Zoom, Skype, MS Teams, WebEx).
• Experience with hybrid teaching.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience developing foreign language instructional material and/or curricula.
• Experience teaching with the communicative approach to language teaching and incorporating a range of educational technologies in teaching.
• Experience delivering training targeted to the needs of the diplomatic community.

Requirements
Contract Requirements Educated native or bilingual speaker. 2+ year(s) of classroom experience teaching Mandarin Chinese language to adult English-speaking students. 1+ year(s) of teaching experience in a small-group classroom setting. Must possess the cultural background of the country and geographical region. (raised or educated in the county). Familiarity with the ILR language levels and ILR-based proficiency assessment highly desired. Familiarity with various computer platforms including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, and virtual meeting software (Zoom, Skype, MS Teams, WebEx). Skills Required Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a distributed team. Strong client service, organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities. Ability to work remotely and provide required services from alternate locations via Zoom, Skype, MS Teams, WebEx, etc. at the direction of the Client highly desired. Instructors must be able to work in a harmonious and professional manner with cultures from around the world.
