Summary  

Functions as a member of the clinical team, provides direct patient care and promotes effective and harmonious interdisciplinary team function through leadership, clinical supervision and oversight of daily operations.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Clinical Required: Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by Federal and State laws and regulations.

Evaluates patient condition. 

Establishes treatment goals, written treatment plan, and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals. Delegates responsibilities to assistants and rehabilitation technicians as appropriate. 

Re-evaluates patient's status and effects of treatment. Revises treatment plan as necessary. Evaluates patient's need for medical equipment and orders the appropriate equipment as necessary.

Evaluates equipment upon delivery and instructs patient, patient's family, and health care workers on its use. 

Participates in planning for patient discharge by considering patient, family, community support/services, and environmental limitations. 

Documents patient's status and progress through initial evaluation, progress notes, and discharge summary according to internal/external time standards and requirements set by Centers for Medicare/ Medicaid Services (CMS) and other regulatory and accreditation bodies.

Communicates with others to integrate specific therapy treatment in optimizing total patient care. 

Participates in conferences/discussions and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members to integrate specific therapy treatment plan. 

Instructs the patient and the family in specific therapy procedures as part of the home program. Provides written instructions as necessary. 

Instructs the visiting public, medical students, physicians, and other professionals in the methods of and objectives in area of expertise. 

Functions as a patient advocate and maintains patient confidentiality. 

Educational Responsibilities: 

Provides education/training of staff in the form of in-services. 

Participates in program development and/or research activities as requested. 

Serves as a resource person for patient care in areas of recognized clinical expertise. 

Serves as a Clinical Instructor for specified therapy students. Supervises, teaches, and evaluates skills of students. Communicates with participating universities regarding skill levels of students. 

Maintains expected productivity.

Manages staffing in alignment with inpatient census: 

Monitors inpatient census and assures appropriate staffing to maintain compliance with IRF requirements for therapy intensity. 

Collaborates with Inpatient Therapy Staffing Coordinator and patient scheduling staff to adjust staffing through call-offs, reassignment or arranging for additional coverage to manage patient care, compliance and productivity of staff. 

Collaborates with therapy staffing coordinator and other team leads to prioritize and approve requests for PTO. 

Talent acquisition and onboarding:

Assumes primary responsibility for interviewing and selection of candidates for open positions reporting to team lead, following MFB policies and procedures. 

Assumes primary responsibility for assuring completion of onboarding activities including orientation, education, competency validation and completion of 90 day probationary period staff evaluations according to established time standards.

Staff development, mentoring and engagement:

Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of rehabilitation for assigned populations to assure and promote evidence-based practice by all therapy staff under lead’s supervision. 

Provides and promotes on-going education, professional development and mentoring of staff within and across interdisciplinary team.

Encourages staff development through formal and informal learning opportunities, and using competency-based education systems. 

Engages staff in process improvement activities. 

Leads staff meetings with direct reports to facilitate effective communication relevant to department, program and organization operations. 

Facilitates the annual employee review process: 

Responsible for annual performance evaluation of direct reports and mid-year performance conversations.

Validates competency. 

Provides coaching to direct reports to address performance issues; develops and implements performance improvement plans as necessary.

Patient Care: 

Manages patient case assignment process. 

Assures that appropriate clinical standards of care are met for patients in areas of assigned responsibility, in accordance with hospital goals, policies and procedures and accreditation standards.

Assures that charges and clinical documentation for therapy staff are completed daily to support billing and compliance. 

Checks intensity of therapy provision and addresses corrective action needed on a daily basis for compliance. 

Develops and validates competency for safe and appropriate use of new equipment. 

Maintains therapy equipment and supplies, identifies need for repairs or replacement and intiates work requests or budget requests as needed to maintain safe working condition of therapy equipment.

Investigates patient concerns related to therapy and provides service recovery. 

Program Development Responsibilities: 

Reviews professional literature and facilitates development of clinical practice protocols. 

Serves on specialty program leadership team to review program performance outcomes and facilitate communication to treating staff of relevant information and facilitate implementation of action needed. 

Assures on-going program accreditation readiness. 

Provides clinical justification to support requests for therapy equipment. 

Provides input to Rehab Director in budget planning process.

Preferred Job Qualifications
