Summary

Reports to the Practice Manager. Operates basic x-ray equipment determining the quality and quantity of ionizing radiation to make quality radiographies. Administers medical x-rays on injured and/or sick patients, as directed by a physician, following accepted procedures and policies. Performs routine laboratory tests as ordered. Assumes reception desk responsibilities when the medical receptionist is unavailable.

Performs diagnostic radiological procedures by:

Practicing radiation protection and quality control; minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure to patients and staff. Practicing sterile and isolation techniques to prevent contamination, applying proper immobilization devices on patient to ensure comfort and safety, and lifting or assisting patients onto radiographic tables when required. Developing film by automatic processing; cleaning processor exterior, washing crossover, reporting malfunctions, and making periodic replenisher and temperature checks as needed. Maintaining organized records and x-ray files and managing incoming x-rays and reports for review by provider. Communicating with clients, patients and provider regarding x-rays and reports.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

Maintaining proper inventory and condition of x-ray supplies and equipment. Performing and recording routine laboratory tests as ordered, maintaining proper inventory and condition of laboratory supplies and equipment. Preparing reports and maintaining records of services rendered. Making minor repairs of x-ray and laboratory equipment. Assisting the physician as required. Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

Performs patient care duties as directed by the physician or nurse by:

Recording medical history. Preparing patient for examination by performing preliminary physical test; taking blood pressure, weight, urinalysis, injections and lab draws. Assisting physician and/or nurse with minor emergency or surgical procedures. Performing routine laboratory and EKG tests as ordered. Administering and recording medication and injections as ordered. Interpreting physician's instructions to patients and providing instruction to patients. Checking and maintaining supply of stock to exam rooms. Cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment. Scheduling office or hospital procedures. Preparing procedure orders and accompanying data to be sent to the hospital for inpatient/outpatient studies. Triaging patient calls to determine urgency and direct patient care. Entering patient information, injections, and results into the electronic medical record. Complete drug and alcohol testing according to the guidelines; certification for federal testing.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared. Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes. Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes. Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year. Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department. Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self. Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance. Complies with established organization and department policies. Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through successful completion of an approved school of radiology technology with subsequent registration and state licensure within six months of date of employment. A minimum of one year of health care experience is required. If your assignment requires you to float to other BOH locations, you must maintain a current State Driver's License.

Demonstrates a knowledge of and competency in performing radiographic procedures, including the ability to obtain satisfactory radiographic and accurate records. Demonstrates knowledge of and competency in performing routine laboratory procedures, including the ability to obtain satisfactory results utilizing measurable and verifiable criteria to meet standards. Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to evaluate information and results utilizing measurable and verifiable criteria to meet standards. Demonstrates verbal ability necessary to exchange information with parties to ensure proper positioning of patients with the least amount of discomfort. Requires the ability to understand oral and written instructions stated in radiographic and medical terms. Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in a tactful, sincere, effective, and professional manner with patients, physicians, visitors, and others. Demonstrates skills in typing, filing, and telephone usage. Requires the ability to perform venipuncture. Requires the manual dexterity necessary to adjust machine controls or change, attach, or adjust devices or accessories.

Working Conditions

Works in clinic environment with some exposure to radiation.

Physical Demands

Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
