Position Summary

In this position, the Sr. Coatings Specialist will work on various projects as part of the NS&E execution center team. The projects that will be assigned involve government work throughout various sectors, including DOD and DOE. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving skills, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. This candidate should also be able to independently perform professional engineering/scientific assignments.

This position requires advanced understanding of engineering/scientific principles for protective coatings, linings, and non-metallic construction materials, especially as it relates to corrosion mitigation. Non-metallic materials include paint, polymer linings, and fireproofing. Skills include proper material selection for defined project specific design criteria. This specialist may need to represent Bechtel in discussions/presentations to clients, management, and/or senior technical personnel.

This role will be based in Knoxville, TN with occasional business travel, as required.

Responsibilities

Develop technical specifications for coatings and corrosion control Support engineering disciplines in preparation of data sheets and material requisition packages Review of coating materials content in technical bids Provide post award technical support to engineers, including review of vendor submittals, resolution of substitution request and non-conformance issues Support a wide variety of projects through engineering design and construction phases coordinating technical issues with other departments on projects including constructability requirements and reviews

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

Level 1 - BS degree in Materials Science Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field experience with six (6) years of progressive related experience, or in lieu of degree, twelve (12) years of progressive related experience. Level 2 - BS degree in Materials Science Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field experience with nine (9) years of progressive related experience, or in lieu of degree, fifteen (15) years of progressive related experience. Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Must be a U.S. citizen. 

Minimum Qualifications

A working knowledge of the principles and practices of Materials (metals) Engineering Ability to work independently and coordinate work with other engineering disciplines Possess relevant industry provided certifications related to coating application, inspection and/or selection Extensive knowledge regarding: Coatings application Coating/lining material selection

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards. Has a broad knowledge of the application of engineering to plant constructability, as pertinent to construction methods and materials Understands engineering planning and control methods, including computerized methods Understands the roles played by other project disciplines, including basic construction practices and economics Understands industry or regulatory codes/standards and design criteria pertinent to the coatings A professional license in an appropriate engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board such as ISO or AMPP/NACE (formerly SSPC and NACE).
