Instructional Design Specialist

The Instructional Design Specialist is responsible for ensuring academic standards in the development and maintenance of exemplary online courses in the Online, Graduate and Professional Studies. The Instructional Design specialist also contributes to the quality assurance process for online courses before delivery each term, develops training materials, and conducts professional development workshops on instructional practices and design principles. The Instructional design Specialist reports to the Sr. Director of Academic Programs and Services- Online Graduate and Professional Studies, and collaborates with faculty, staff, and administrators across the College on a regular basis.

The ideal candidate has a demonstrated excellence in course design and development, awareness of the latest trends in instructional practices and design principles and has experience in promoting best practices in effective course design and delivery utilizing adult learning theory and effective instructional methods.

Course Preparation:

Deliver new adjunct orientation for undergraduate GPS faculty. This will include training in Canvas and other systems Manage and regularly update all GPS course syllabus templates Identify training needs; develop and deliver ongoing training workshops for faculty and staff, sharing current research and trends in instructional design and educational technology Mentor faculty as they prepare to teach their first course Provide undergraduate GPS instructors with preparation materials for each term they are assigned to teach, including official course syllabus, current syllabus template, important dates, academic integrity policy and process, any other relevant information, and a timeline of tasks Review and collect all course syllabi and store them on the shared network drive Review all undergraduate GPS course templates prior to delivery each term; once approved, make the course sites live to students

Course Content and Design and Quality Assurance: 

Review and recommend Quality Assurance standards for use in developing and reviewing course content Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to the design, development and review of content/materials to meet ADA compliance Serve as a subject matter expert to faculty regarding instructional design strategies and best practices fostering the development of technologically and pedagogically sound content/materials employing adult learning theories Manage the development and maintenance of master course templates, expanding the availability of master templates each year as requested (to be determined on a rolling basis) Audit classes on a rotating basis, prior to mid-term to ensure institutional quality standards are met, the gradebook is being used properly and the course is effective for student learning using student feedback as well as current research, trends, and advancements in instructional design and educational technology to make recommendations for improvements Each term, identify specific courses to be redesigned (on a rolling basis) with the faculty, incorporating the expertise of the instructional designer

General Administrative Duties:

Proactively build and foster relationships with faculty to support a work environment conducive of sharing ideas and providing feedback; (and adherence to timelines) Serve as a member of the GPS Academic Oversight Committee Support the Director of Academic Programs and Services in the planning, execution, and maintenance of online courses and programs operations and learning management system operation

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Instructional Design or similar or equivalent experience Minimum of 2 years of experience in Instructional design and course development Preferred knowledge of Canvas learning management system
