WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, has an immediate need for a Loss Control Specialist to join our non-California Loss Control team. The assigned territory will be Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. The Loss Control Specialist provides comprehensive risk management solutions and loss control services to current and prospective policyholders, identifying potential hazards and risks within the workplace, assessing the insured’s safety protocols and procedures, and implementing effective strategies to minimize accidents or injuries and mitigate subsequent workers’ compensation claims. This professional provides valuable insights to Underwriting as to workplace findings, assisting them in properly pricing risk, and works closely with our policyholders to enhance the overall safety culture within the organization, resulting in fewer incidents and improved operational efficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages assigned book of business within a given territory, ensuring service plans are in place, surveys and resurveys are competed, high risk accounts are identified, and Underwriting is kept informed of progress/change. Schedules and completes onsite visits, evaluating workplace environments, identifying risks, and producing thorough documentation of findings and supporting recommendations. Monitors policyholder loss activity and develops strategies for loss reduction. Applies technical knowledge to assist policyholders in identifying key objectives to improve safety and loss control at the workplace. Provides consultative and training services to support the account’s risk mitigation objectives. Serves as a subject matter expert and training resource for internal business partners and external customers in occupational safety and loss prevention. Conducts onsite training as appropriate. Maintains professional designations and certifications as required by regulatory bodies for assigned territories. Participates in departmental initiatives. Performs special assignments and projects as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health & Sciences, Engineering, Hard Sciences (Math, Chemistry, Biology, Physics), or related discipline. CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES: Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Occupational Safety and Health Technologist (OHST), Associate of Risk Management (ARM), or similar certification preferred. Valid Driver’s License to drive in the United States in good standing required. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years providing loss control or occupation-related safety services, preferably with workers’ compensation carrier, required. Experience developing, implementing, and auditing safety management systems for organizations required. TECHNICAL SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, the individual must possess: Thorough understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) Regulations and standards; relevant industry legal and regulatory compliance requirements. Demonstratable ability to conduct comprehensive risk assessments and develop effective risk management strategies for common loss sources. Knowledge of industry-standard investigation techniques and protocols and incident data analyzation. Familiarity with safety management systems (, OSHA 1910, OSHA 1926, OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001). Knowledge of specific equipment, machinery, processes, and hazards related to manufacturing, construction, healthcare and service industries. Familiarity with development of emergency response plans. Proficiency in data analysis and reporting – demonstratable ability to collect, analyze, and interpret safety data to identify trends, track progress, and provide meaningful reports to clients and stakeholders. Knowledge of office operations, workflow analysis, and current technologies in telecommunications, data entry, and file management.  COMPUTER SKILLS : To perform this job successfully, the individual should be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of applications and able to quickly master proprietary and vended software applications.
