At Houston Methodist the ASC Registered Nurse(RN) position a licensed staff nurse an experienced clinicianfunctions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benners model ofclinical practice. The ASC RN position is responsible for providingprofessional nursing care to a diverse patient populationconducting nursing assessments assisting with exams and treatmentpatient education and maintenance of medical records. The ASC RNposition provides direct patient care effectively and efficientlywhich may include patients with varied and complex needs. Thisposition communicates and collaborates with the physicians andinterprofessional health care team to facilitate coordinate andmaintain compassionate efficient quality care and achievement ofdesired treatment outcomes. The ASC RN position demonstratesclinical competence when providing care using technologyadministering medications performing procedures and managingemergencies acting as a patient and family advocate in order tomonitor and maintain patient rights. This position assumesleadership roles with progressive responsibility including but notlimited to participating in or leading shared governanceinitiatives.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
  • Uses therapeuticcommunication which includes active listening and teaching toestablish a relationship with patients families andinterprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan ofcare.
  • Maintainscooperative relationship among health care teams by communicatinginformation; responds to requests; builds rapport; participates inteam problemsolving methods. Seeks guidance from and offersguidance to interprofessional health care team when appropriate andapplies feedback to improve patientoutcomes.
  • Implements staffeducation specific to patient populations and department processescoaches and mentors other staff and students. May includepreceptorship. Uses peertopeer accountability towards improvementof department score for employeeengagement.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Followsthe patient and familycentered care standards as outlined in theHouston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Conductsnursing assessments assists with exams and treatment andmaintenance of medical records. Practices in a manner that iscongruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples.
  • Developsupdates and communicates plan of care including discharge inpartnership with the patient family and interprofessional healthcare team using the nursing process. Prioritizes care based on thepatients needs abilities and preferences. Advocates onpatient/familys behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethicalconcerns utilizing appropriate resources. Provides physicalemotional and psychological support to patients friends andfamilies.
  • Provides patientteaching based on learning needs uses appropriate resourcesincorporating planning for care after discharge. Consistentlyevaluates the patients comprehension and adapts teaching methodsaccordingly.
  • Helps driveimprovement of department score for patient satisfaction throughpeertopeer accountability to servicestandards.

QUALITY/SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Followsthe standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined inthe Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practicedocument.
  • Follows thestandards related to regulatory requirements and professionalpractice as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional NursingPractice document. Identifies areas of practice improvements withresearchbased evidence to achieve core measure and patient safetyoutcomes supported by accuratedocumentation.
  • Providesand modifies care to complex patients and coordinates care with theinterprofessional team based on evaluation of the patientscondition supported by accurate documentation. Utilizes clinicaljudgment using an evidencebased analyticalapproach.
  • Improves qualityand safety scores through peertopeer accountability reporting nearmisses and collaborating with the interprofessional health careteam.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
  • Displaysselfmotivation to independently manage time effectively timelydocument care minimize incidental overtime and prioritize dailytasks. Contributes towards meeting department financial targetsthrough optimizing efficiency and other areas according todepartmentspecifications.

GROWTH/INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Identifies andpresents areas for innovation efficiency and improvement in patientcare or department operations using evidencebased practiceliterature. Offers innovative solutions through evidencebasedpractice/performance improvement projects and shared governanceactivities.
  • Champions newcare pathways or service line implementation to improve service tothe community. Identifies trends for improvement opportunities orpractice changes and supports initiatives. Researches the changeand presents options to shared governance andleadership.
  • Seeksopportunities to identify selfdevelopment needs and takesappropriate action. Ensures own career discussions occur withappropriate management. Completes and updates the My DevelopmentPlan on an ongoing basis.
