General Responsibilities

Assist the Utility Worker II in repairing leaks, maintenance repairs and valves installations; haul off spoil from excavations; backfill and restore lawns and the street with temporary paving and clean up at the site. Repair and replace fire hydrants. Installation of water mains, service lines, and domestic service taps, cutting rights-of-way for transmission of water mains.

Essential Job Functions

Assist Utility Worker II on job sites and train new employees. Locate leaks and lines accurately to minimize unnecessary excavation and repair costs. Operate equipment such as a jackhammer to remove paving and concrete, pumps, pipe-cutting hand tools, air compressors and radio. Repair leaks on mains, replace curb stops and copper installations, and repair sleeves and split sleeves. Install bracing, blocking and strap fittings, pipes, valves, cut and cap mains. Calculate the requirements and requisition concrete, road gravel, fill sand and asphalt. Flush mains and service lines after water mains have been installed or repaired.

Maintain and replace fire hydrants, notify the supervisor of fire hydrant part changes and meet with Fire Department officials when needed. Replace and restore paving, concrete and landscaping. Read and use maps to locate lines and valves to shut off the water as needed Replace and repair service lines and install and replace meter boxes as needed Communicate with customers by providing excellent customer service while performing duties. Maintain traffic control in the work area using flags to ensure a safe working environment. Operate the assigned vehicle, keep it clean and report all mechanical problems. Maintain a valid driver’s license.

Adhere to all traffic laws and safety policies and procedures when driving company vehicles. Work an on-call rotating schedule outside the regular schedule on a rotating basis. Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management. Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid Alabama Drivers License

Valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License (CDL – A) required.

Grade 1 Water Certification - Preferred

Experience

One (1) year of construction or maintenance experience is required. Basic computer skills preferred; excellent customer relations and communication skills preferred

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard

Communication skills using the spoken word

Work Enviroment

Indoors and outdoors; ability to work near moving mechanical parts,

Outdoors exposed to extreme hot/cold and or wet weather conditions..
