GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The User Experience Librarian collaborates closely with librarians and technical staff to promote new models for web development and design and implement best practices for digital content and services. As a liaison to academic units on campus, he/she also provides research and instructional services to a diverse community of faculty, staff, and student users of the Paul V. Galvin Library. COMMUNICATIONS Demonstrates excellence in oral, written and presentation communication skills. Works with all IIT campus partners to provide resources and services in an environment that supports both learning and research, as well as communicates effectively with members of the public and professional community. Works cooperatively with staff at all IIT libraries and participates in working groups and committees as necessary. Promotes the Galvin Library to its internal constituency and to its external university partners. CUSTOMER SERVICE Provides service to faculty, students and staff at IIT’s Main campus. Appreciates a multicultural academic and research environment. Demonstrates a commitment to service excellence. Represents IIT Libraries externally in professional activities. Special Schedule Requirements Qualifications Education & Experience An MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, and a bachelor’s or higher degree in computer science, information technology, or equivalent experience in web development. Two years experience in an academic library environment or web communications and marketing is preferred. Knowledge & Skills Ability to maintain an atmosphere conducive to job productivity and satisfaction where team goals are aligned to meet library objectives. Ability to establish efficient, realistic plans that clearly convey the mission and philosophy of the university and the library; set priorities; and communicate, share, evaluate and measure plans. Ability to experiment, take risks, and accept responsibility for outcomes; monitor and analyze current trends; exercise creativity; and participate actively in the profession. Maintain a service attitude that improves user perceptions and participate in campus activities. Demonstrate a high level of understanding of librarianship and the information industry. Experience in the use of technology to enhance learning and web usability testing. Demonstrated knowledge with Open Source CMS, such as Drupal, as well as web programming languages such as PHP, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and/or ASP. Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design programs such as Photoshop and/or Illustrator. Familiarity with relational database management systems and document markup languages such as XML or TEI. Familiarity with W3C standards, and cross-browser and platform compatibility issues. Broad understanding of the application of information technologies in the academic library and commitment to open-source technologies. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, initiative, flexibility, ability to work creatively, and quickly adapt to and learn new methods of seeking information. A commitment to providing services to a diverse user population. SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY N/A Physical Environment and Requirements Academic library Standing 50% of the time while training staff or assisting patrons. Lift 25 lbs. when moving books or journals. Certifications and Licenses List any certifications or licenses that are either required or helpful in performing the job, designating whether required or preferred. An MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, and a bachelor’s or higher degree in computer science, information technology, or equivalent experience in web development. Key Responsibilities Key Responsibility Develop and maintain IIT Library websites and digital content. Support evolving user-centered services informed by current User Experience practices. Manage a distributed workflow for updating and maintaining the content and design of the library’s website Percentage Of Time 25 Key Responsibility Design, organize, and plan projects that create new digital content for the library including web-based tutorials, digitally reformatted collections, subject specific pathfinders, and other digital library services Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility Serve as the liaison to the academic departments of Computer Science, Math and Science Education (MS), and the ITM program. Actively participate in relevant campus and professional activities while working to maintain good relationships with library stakeholders. Assist library patrons as well as colleagues with the provision of services outlined in the Liaison Duties Addendum document. Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility Prepare narrative and statistical reports when evaluating the use and usability of the Galvin Library’s digital library services. Recommend digital services, website development and program content, and maintain relationships with providers of digital library services. Percentage Of Time 15 Key Responsibility Provide back-up support and assistance for a variety of library systems, including the integrated library system, proxy server, link resolver, server support and monitoring overall system performance.
