Duties and Responsibilities 
Develops a broad-based extension program for the agricultural community and in support of the Department of Hawaiian Homeland Lessees (DHHL) on Maui; which may include implementing extension education program activities; and reporting project outcomes, impacts and results to clientele and administration. Develops an extension program that will provide innovative, cost effective, and timely research-based information that will contribute to the economic competitiveness of commercial agricultural producers, communities, and businesses. Subject areas may include, but are not limited to, sustainable and organic crop production, commercial crop production/cultural crop management (nutritional and pest), evaluating new cultivars, farm management, risk management, farm food safety (FSMA), good agricultural practices (GAP), pesticide safety, agribusiness, product promotion, and marketing.  Develops extension education programs for agricultural growers and subsistence homesteaders in growing food and cultural plants. Works in collaboration and partnership with private and public organizations and/or individuals to address the immediate and emerging agriculture industry needs. Provides research-based information to stakeholders via various extension delivery methods, such as social media, newsletters, reports, applied research projects, field demonstrations, on-farm research and demonstrations, field days, workshops, extension short courses, conferences, meetings, individual consultations, and publishing scholarly information. Assists stakeholders with field diagnosis of crop production problems and provide appropriate recommendations. Conducts and participate in activities that would result in the development and publication of scholarly information that address clientele needs through appropriate media methods, such as hard copy publications, web-based publications, social media, and other communication and media alternatives. Obtains local, regional, and national funding to establish a program that addresses industry needs.  Pursues opportunities and participates in professional improvement activities.  Collaborates with stakeholders which may involve meetings that occur after normal working hours and/or on weekends at off-site locations. Minimum Qualifications 
Bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing, in horticulture, agronomy, agriculture, or related area. Ability to apply Extension teaching methods. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai'i Driver's License (class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation that meets position needs.  Desirable Qualifications
Master’s degree in horticulture, agronomy, or other related agriculture field with major work in areas of vegetable and/or fruit crop production from a college or university of recognized standing. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional educational tools. Experience in livestock production and management. Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding or other in-kind program resources. Experience with developing educational materials for websites and using social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for educational purposes. Familiarity with the unique agricultural systems of Hawai‘i and a passion to help DHHL Homesteader on Maui. Working knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian culture, agriculture, and/or language. Previous work experience in cooperative extension. Ability to diagnose crop production problems and recommend alternative solutions to agriculture producers, including both edible crop and livestock producers. Experience and ability to apply Extension teaching methods. Experience in using extension methods and techniques to teach production technologies.
