NOVA Workforce is seeking English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors to teach in-person Intensive English and Part Time ESL semester-long courses at our American Culture & Language Institute (ACLI). Course levels range from CEFR: A1-C1. Intensive courses teach paired skills: Reading & Writing and Speaking & Listening. Part-Time ESL courses teach integrated skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) with a focus on readiness for life, for school and for work

This position is for in-person instruction only. Applicants who wish to only teach remotely will not be considered. Courses are held at the Alexandria Campus, Annandale Campus, Loudoun Campus’ satellite location: Signal Hill Building, and Manassas Campus.

This posting is designed to build a pool of potential ESL instructors for ACLI. Instructors are hired on a semester or project basis. Teaching in one semester does not necessarily guarantee future teaching appointments. There may or may not be any positions currently available at the time of application. However, in order to be considered for current/future openings, please complete the application process.

Duties and Tasks: Teach an Intensive ESL (125 hrs per semester) or a Part-Time ESL (50 hrs per semester) course in person at Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun/Signal Hill or Manassas. Teach during business hours (Intensive ESL and Part-Time ESL) Demonstrate student centered, communicative teaching methodologies (task-based, problem-based, project based, scaffolding, content-based) in lesson planning and in lesson presentation. Develop authentic, reliable, ongoing productive formative assessments for students throughout the semester. Utilize Canvas for course information and to store student assignments/resources. Utilize the assigned textbook(s) and supplement with level-appropriate materials as needed. Evaluate students’ entry and exit skills via the initial diagnostic tasks and final departmental exams and the department rubrics. Record student attendance. Complete all mandatory training at hire and annually.
Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications KSAs: Deep knowledge of communicative language teaching methodologies: task-based, problem-based, project based, scaffolding, and content-based Highly experienced Canvas/Blackboard or related LMS usage for instruction (assignments, quizzes, discussion boards, gradebook, modules) Excellent organizational skills and classroom management skills Ability to work with groups of varying ages and skill levels – including differentiating instruction Ability to utilize program rubrics to grade students Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work individually as well as on a team
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + a TESOL Certificate or higher education in TESOL or Linguistics. 1-2 years or more of adult ESL teaching experience at a college/community college/literacy council/adult education ESOL
Additional Considerations Preferred Qualifications: Masters in TESOL/TESL or Masters in Linguistics with a minor in TESOL or a TESOL Certificate 3-5 years or more of adult ESL teaching experience at a college/community college/literacy council/adult education ESOL
