Position Summary

The University of Nebraska Medical Center seeks a transformative leader in teaching and learning to lead the Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE).

The Academy’s mission is to cultivate a community ​across professions that connects educators with like interests to drive collaboration, innovation and scholarship.

The IAE serves faculty and staff in the UNMC Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Public Health; the Graduate College, the Munroe-Meyer Institute and the Eppley Institute; and UNO and Nebraska Medicine. In addition, the IAE engages community preceptors, alumni and health science students in educational activities.

As a key leader in UNMC’s expanding teaching and learning initiative, the Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and works closely with the following educational entities:

• The Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL) – a center of excellence for interprofessional, interdisciplinary, integrated, experiential simulation and virtual reality training.
• The Education Council – the group of senior academic affairs deans at UNMC
• The Office of Faculty Development at UNMC
• The Office of Health Professions Education at Nebraska Medicine
• The Promotion and Tenure committees within each college

This is an administrative appointment with a 3 year limited term, with the possibility of a one term renewal. The director is expected to be a senior academic professional with an appropriate faculty appointment in a relevant department.

Responsibilities will include:

• Administrative Leadership: Oversee the day-to-day activities of the IAE, including coordination with the Associate Directors and the PhD Education Researchers and support staff. Chair the regular (quarterly) SIG chair committee meetings of the IAE. Oversee the process for membership within the IAE, in cooperation with the IAE Membership Committee. Ensure that the IAE maintains a truly interprofessional culture. Work with members of the IAE to help with the formation of IAE Interest Groups and subcommittees as needed. Collaborate with Distance Education to hold an annual program (InnovatED) to promote educational innovation by UNMC faculty and staff. Oversee Teaching Launchpad, featuring workshops, presentations and/or other resources to provide professional development for educators. Collaborate with IAE Educational Researchers to promote and support educational research and scholarship by UNMC faculty and staff, including hosting the annual Spotlight on Scholarship event. Oversee the disbursement of any available IAE Education Research Grant awards. Serve as a collaborative unit to support curriculum development and faculty integration into iEXCEL. Represent the IAE at Education Council, Academic Affairs, and Faculty Affairs meetings. Ensure that the stated outcomes of the Academy are met; namely:Defining, assessing, and rewarding scholarshipProviding structured activities to promote the scholarship of teaching and researchSetting and meeting scholarship goalsCollaborate with key campus units and leaders to enhance teaching quality and curricular innovation (including, but not limited to the Office of Faculty Development, Education Council, Nebraska Medicine Office of Health Professions Education)Work closely with each College’s Promotion and Tenure Committee, and Faculty Affairs, to support policies and procedures that recognize the importance of health sciences education and mentorship for rank advancement.Collect and analyze data regularly on the activities of the Academy that will lead to the production and annual report of accomplishments as required by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Required Qualifications The successful candidate will have:
• Terminal professional degree such as a(n) DDS/ EdD/MD/PharmD/PhD etc. and a minimum of 5 years of related academic experience including a leadership role, preferably with an educational unit
• Experience with interprofessional education
• Membership in the UNMC Interprofessoinal Academy of Educators• Experience with research in teaching and learning, and a record of successful funding/publications to support that research
• Evidence of excellence in classroom teaching for health sciences students
• Thorough knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in pedagogy and educational technology flipped and blended learning, digital learning, MOOCs, adaptive learning technologies, etc.).
• Experience fostering and sustaining learning communities to advance curricular and pedagogical experimentation and the sharing of best practices.
• A record of success working with learners at multiple levels utilizing different modalities of instruction (live, blended, online)
• Experience creating sustainable curricular innovation.
• A commitment to diversity and to ensuring the success of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
• Experience in managing budgets and personnel
• Engagement in national organizations for teaching and learning and leadership in such organizations Supplemental Qualifications •Five (5) years’ experience in program coordination in higher education.
•Successful experience mentoring, teaching, or supervising students.
•Ability to set goals, lead and motivate a diverse team, and demonstrate measureable results.
•Success in obtaining and administering external grants.
•Demonstrated experience working with diverse student and community populations.
