I am working with a growing company in South Carolina looking to add an Operations Manager to their team. This candidate will have to have ground improvement/piling experience.

The Operations Manager serves as the primary manager of the efforts to install ground improvement products in the field with an emphasis on safety and quality.

Staffing & Labor:

  • The OM shall make staffing recommendations for field/workshop employees to the GM. Should these recommendations be accepted, the OM shall be responsible for executing these recommendations.
    • Staffing recommendations include hiring, firing, compensation changes, promotions, demotions, etc.
    • The OM does not need to consult the GM for terminations of any employee who does not act in a supervisory role or has committed a >Tier 3 Violation according to the Progressive Discipline Program. Detailed records must be kept and shared with the GM to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • The OM shall be responsible for scheduling appropriate personnel for projects.
  • The OM shall be responsible for maintaining discipline among the Superintendents and their field crews.
  • The OM shall perform regularly scheduled reviews of Superintendents and field crew employees.

Equipment & Tooling:

  • The OM shall ensure proper maintenance of equipment and tooling as needed to ensure execution of scheduled jobs.
  • The OM shall make equipment, tooling, and parts purchase recommendations to the GM as needed to ensure execution of scheduled jobs.
  • The OM shall be responsible for overseeing work executed in the workshops of The Company.
  • The OM shall maintain a suitable spare parts stock to ensure repairs, maintenance, and other shop/field activities can proceed without delaying project execution.
  • The OM shall oversee the Vibro-repair Workshop and coordinate with vibro-mechanics on repair priorities, schedule, and communicate the results of such to Project Managers.

Project Bidding:

  • The OM shall provide input on production capabilities, crew needs, equipment needs, and other pertinent information during the bidding process on high risk or high-profile projects.
  • The OM shall periodically meet with the project bidding teams to offer feedback to improve the accuracy of the team’s predictions and projections during bidding.

Project Preparation:

  • The OM ensure the pre-optimization meetings between project managers and superintendents are performed prior to the mobilization of each project.
  • The OM shall ensure superintendents have reserved and scheduled rental equipment appropriate for each project.
  • The OM shall perform, or arrange a Superintendent or other competent persons to perform, a pre-mobilization project site visit.
  • The OM shall organize transportation of equipment, tooling, materials, and supplies necessary for each project to the jobsite.
  • The OM shall alert the GM to any observed project risks that were not foreseen during tender.
  • The OM shall alert the GM should a project require equipment, tooling, personnel, or other resources not available to The Company.

Project Execution:

  • The OM shall regularly check in on project progress with the Superintendent and inform the Project Manager of any expected delays, issues, or other pertinent information.
  • The OM shall ensure proper installation methods are utilized on site and that the products of The Company are installed to the highest quality.
  • The OM shall be responsible for ensuring the safe execution of projects.
  • The OM shall mobilize staff, equipment, and other resources necessary for ensuring satisfactory project completion and profitability.

Safety:

  • The OM shall be responsible for investigating, documenting, and alerting the GM to any occurrences of employee injury or significant property damage.
  • The OM shall keep PPE readily available to employees, train employees on correct PPE usage, and ensure its proper, widespread use.
  • The OM shall have a safety shutdown power which can only be overruled by the GM. Should the GM overrule the OM despite objections, the OM may in writing alert the Management Oversight Committee of the dispute.
  • The OM shall perform regular audits of jobsites, and other WBG operations to ensure safety remains a priority across the organization.
  • The OM, along with the GM and other staff, are responsible for promoting a culture of safety throughout the company.
  • The OM shall be responsible for maintaining necessary safety certifications (e.g. Silica training, OSHA cards, CPR, etc.) throughout the field staff.
  • The OM shall coordinate and lead an annual safety shutdown day for all The Company employees.
