Job Summary:  

The position is in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, specifically, Drs. Reesha Patel and Hao Li’s laboratories. We are looking for a full-time Research Technologist to support the day-to-day operational and research needs. This includes conducting tests and procedures, setting up and operating equipment as needed, recordings and quantifying data collected, and communicating findings to research group. Experiments range from rodent surgeries and behaviors, in vivo physiological recordings (e.g. fiber photometry), in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and computational analysis. This position will be required to follow pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, and regulations.

This will be a 1-year renewable position based upon performance. This position is a FULL-TIME position at 40.0 hours per week and works on-site.

Please note this position will require: Previous rodent research experience and a willingness to work with mice.

Occasionally working evenings or weekends, if experiments require.

 

Specific Responsibilities:  

  • Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy. 

Histology:

  • Tissue fixation/processing, sectioning, mounting, and staining
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • In situ hybridization
  • Microscopy    

Animal:

  • Surgical procedures
  • Database management of the colony

Other (please specify):

  • Running behavioral experiments with mice
  • Create/modify behavioral experiment protocols
  • Setup experimental equipment

Administration

  • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
  • Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.
  • Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.  
  • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
  • Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts & publications.

Finance

  • Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.
  • Verifies accuracy of invoices.  
  • Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice &/or lab supplies.

Supervises

  • Trains students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology, neuroscience, psychology or related field; OR appropriate combination of education and experience. 
  • Previous rodent research experience required.

 

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Demonstrated laboratory experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols;
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations;
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Manual dexterity.

 

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Masters degree in neuroscience, psychology, biology, or related field

  • Experience with rodent behavioral experiments and neuroscience research techniques
