Qualifications/Requirements:

Education and Certification:

Associate's degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant program from an accredited institution. Successful completion of the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) examination to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

Clinical Experience:

Prior experience as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, preferably in a skilled nursing facility or similar setting. Experience in geriatric care, addressing functional limitations, cognitive impairments, and rehabilitation needs.

Knowledge and Skills:

Proficiency in implementing treatment plans developed by Occupational Therapists to address patients' goals and promote functional independence. Ability to perform therapeutic activities and exercises to improve patients' strength, coordination, and motor skills. Understanding of adaptive equipment and assistive devices to enhance patients' independence in daily activities. Knowledge of cognitive rehabilitation techniques and strategies to support individuals with cognitive impairments. Familiarity with environmental modifications and recommendations to improve patients' home or living environments. Ability to provide guidance and training to patients, family members, and caregivers regarding home exercises and strategies for functional improvement.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with patients, their families, and interdisciplinary team members. Empathy and patience to work with individuals who may have physical or cognitive challenges. A collaborative approach to working with other healthcare professionals, such as Occupational Therapists, nurses, speech-language pathologists, and physical therapists.

Compliance and Documentation:

Adherence to legal, ethical, and regulatory guidelines for Occupational Therapy Assistant practice. Competence in maintaining accurate and timely documentation of treatment sessions, progress notes, and relevant patient information.

Continuing Education:

Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and continuing education activities to stay updated with advancements in the field.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods to assist patients during therapy sessions. Physical dexterity to facilitate therapeutic activities, assist with transfers, and use equipment. Capacity to lift and position patients as needed.
