Job Title: Diesel Mechanic (Specializing in Heavy Equipment) Employment Type: Full-Time Reports to: Fleet Manager or Maintenance Supervisor
Company Overview: Our client, a leader in the waste and recycling industry, is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic with extensive experience in maintaining and repairing heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. This role is critical in ensuring the reliability and safety of our fleet, which includes vacuum trucks, street sweepers, hydro excavators, and other machinery.
Job Summary: The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and hydraulic systems on a variety of heavy equipment used in street maintenance and sewer maintenance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with both routine maintenance and complex repairs on equipment such as vacuum trucks and other specialized vehicles. This position plays a key role in ensuring operational efficiency and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance & Repairs:
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a fleet of heavy equipment, including vacuum trucks, street sweepers, hydro excavators, etc.
- Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical components, and braking systems.
- Conduct routine preventative maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid level checks, and brake inspections to ensure vehicle longevity and safety.
- Fleet Management:
- Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repairs performed on vehicles and equipment.
- Ensure all equipment is compliant with local, state, and federal safety and emissions regulations.
- Assist in managing the maintenance schedule to minimize downtime for vehicles.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including wearing proper PPE and following procedures for hazardous materials handling.
- Stay up-to-date with industry best practices and ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Diesel Mechanic, with a focus on heavy-duty vehicles such as garbage trucks, vacuum trucks, street sweepers, hydro excavators, and similar equipment.
- Certifications: ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in diesel mechanics preferred but not required. CDL preferred but not required.
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with hydraulic systems, diesel engines, electrical systems, and brake repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational or technical training in diesel mechanics or heavy equipment repair is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more, perform physical tasks including standing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Must be able to work in outdoor conditions and various weather environments.
