Northwest Indian Language Institute, Northwest Regional Native American Language Resource Center Project Manager

Eugene, United States University Of Oregon Full time
Department Summary

The School of Global Studies and Languages (SGSL) within the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) has an integrated curriculum that combines hands-on learning programs and new ways to study and apply languages while incorporating social science education, cultural competency, and professional training to create a central hub for global careers and language learning at the UO.

The Northwest Indian Language Institute (NILI) was created at the University of Oregon (UO) in 1997 as an answer to Oregon, Washington, and Idaho tribal requests for Native language teacher training. Ichishkíin language teachers from Warm Springs and the Yakama Nation who had attended the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) were inspired to develop their own institute to address specifically the needs of their critically endangered Pacific Northwest language communities, which began summer 1998. Since then, NILI has become a year-round program serving Native language communities locally, nationally, and internationally.

NILI’s mission is to support and strengthen language preservation and revitalization efforts. With Tribal, academic and community partners, NILI establishes collaborative, on-going projects, which meet the specific needs and desires of each language community. Integral to NILI are teacher training, curriculum development, language documentation and appropriate uses in technology. NILI provides outreach services on issues of language endangerment and advocates for language revitalization issues. NILI supports Indigenous students on the UO campus who are interested in language revitalization and restoration.

NILI was awarded a federal grant to fund the Native American Language Resource Center (NALRC) project. The NALRC serves Alaska Native/Native American (AN/NA) Tribes, State Educational Agencies (SEA), Local Educational Agencies (LEA) and Institutes of Higher Education (IHE) in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. It supports the teaching and use of AN/NA languages.

Position Summary

The Project Manager provides day-to-day oversight, communications, and coordination of the Native American Language Resource Center (NALRC) project.

The Project Manager will work to support NILI NALRC goals that include: supporting the use of AN/NA languages in educational systems; building teaching expertise and supporting the recruitment/retention of language teachers; providing technical assistance; developing an online resource hub.

The position will coordinate and manage the project, develop work plans, and develop and maintain project tracking documents, and ensure the team is making progress in completing objectives. They will contribute to project activities, assist the PI and Co-PI team in implementing the project, and be available to participants, committee members and personnel.

The position works closely with UO entities including SGSL, Yamada Language Center, Continuing and Professional Education, Native Strategies, Conferences and Catering, CAS grants, and others. They work closely with project participants external to UO including state and local educational agencies, Tribal Nations, project steering committee members and educational agency advisory committee members, and individuals accessing trainings and resources as well as others to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

The position works in collaboration with the PI/co-PI team. The position can make administrative decisions on behalf of the NALRC in consultation of the PI team. This position is funding contingent on a five (5) year award and reports to the Principal Investigator (PI) of the grant. The position supervises student workers and assists in the contracting process.

Minimum Requirements

• Two years of program/project coordination experience in an education or government setting.
• Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Indigenous education, language revitalization, linguistics, Native American or Indigenous Studies, or equivalent combination of skills, experience, and education.
