• How is your teaching approach culturally-responsive to the students you serve? The Position The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Adaptive Physical Education. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years. Duties and Responsibilities The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.
1. Teach a variety of adaptive physical education courses
2. Assist in the development of curriculum and modes of instruction in adaptive physical education
3. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment and technology that will enhance offerings in the department
4. Assist with outreach to local hospitals and clinics
5. Maintain student records as required including, but not limited to, physician consent forms
6. Assist students in the admissions and enrollment process for each semester of participation
7. Solicit, train and supervise student volunteers, work study, interns and volunteer aides to assist with classes and students
8. Engage in the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) and assessment process as a means of establishing student need
9. Coordinate with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) as appropriate to document student need and eligibility
10. Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
11. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
12. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs
13. The college offers day, evening, and weekend classes, and faculty may be required to teach during any of these Minimum Qualifications • Possession of a Master’s or above in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s or above in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy OR the equivalent AND completion of 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted physical education
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
• Current CPR/First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain certification before assignment begins Physical Requirements Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications For persons applying for this position based on Equivalence, please answer the supplemental question on the online application indicating one or more of the following:
b. Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
b. Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
b. Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:
i. Subject matter preparation/ evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:
Preference will be given to candidates who:
1. Have recent successful experience teaching in adaptive physical education or in a related field
2. Have an understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of this community college
3. Have a commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for supporting departmental and college missions
4. Have the ability to assess and document students’ achievement of student learning outcomes
5. Have the ability to organize, demonstrate and explain materials which correspond with students’ abilities, levels of preparation, and learning styles
6. Have knowledge of current theories and teaching methods, especially in a culturally diverse student population
7. Have commitment to remaining current with the latest developments in the discipline
8. Have the ability to establish close relationships with DRC staff to support student success
9. Have the ability to solicit, supervise and train volunteers and aides to assist in the program
10. Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by a U.S.-based credentials evaluation service. The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
