Position Summary
Under general supervision of the History Department Chair, faculty in these positions are responsible for teaching undergraduate courses, advising students, and supervising teacher candidates in their field and student teaching placements. The teaching load for each hire will be decided in conjunction with the Chair of the History department and will be based on curricular need. In addition to preparing for and holding classes, teaching involves maintaining currency in the content area related to the teaching assignment, evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours. The individual is expected to maintain an active, on-going program of scholarship appropriate to the discipline. In addition, these individuals will provide service to the department, college, and university and are likely expected to provide service to the community and/or the profession. Other duties may be assigned by the Chair or dean. Responsibilities are expected to include teaching undergraduate courses in the following areas: middle and high school social studies methods; methods for teaching English learners, and curriculum, instruction, and assessment in social studies. In addition, there is an expectation for these individuals to supervise teacher candidates in field and/or student teaching experiences and provide academic advising for social studies education teacher candidates. One of these hires will be expected to coordinate the annual National History Day event on our campus. We are looking for candidates to start August 2024.
This position is affiliated with the School of Education (SOE) and the Dean of SOE will provide feedback regarding hiring and personnel reviews. School of Education affiliated staff are expected to be engaged in scholarship, service activities, and continuous learning to inform and enhance the work they do with prospective teachers. Some additional work hours outside the academic school year may be required to align duties with the K-12 school year. Faculty members in this position collaborate with the School of Education on advising and curricular-related issues.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Social Studies Education or comparable field completed by time of first personnel review in Spring 2025. Currently hold or previously held a teaching license in social studies education at the middle and/or high school level Minimum of 3 years social studies education teaching experience in U.S. K-12 schools or the equivalent at the middle and/or high school level Ability to teach undergraduate courses in: social studies curriculum, instruction, and assessment; methods for English learners; social studies pedagogy and practice at the middle and high school levels. Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with or knowledge of methods associated with the teaching of English Learners Teaching experience at both the middle and high school levels Knowledge of teaching methodologies in multiple social studies content areas (history, political science, psychology, sociology, geography, economics) Experience as a cooperating teacher and/or student teaching supervisor Experience in school/community collaboration, including working effectively in partnership with a variety of institutional systems, educators, and the community Experience with or knowledge of National History Day Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, including ability to supervise pre-service teachers in a middle and/or high school setting Evidence of teaching effectiveness Potential for professional flexibility and curriculum development Evidence of/potential for scholarship Commitment to professional service
Working conditions and environment
Office/ Classroom setting Some additional work hours outside the academic school year may be required in order to align duties with the K-12 school year. A vehicle and valid drivers license are required for field experience and student teaching supervision responsibilities.
