Position Summary

Posting Note: Division Chief, Pediatric Emergency MedicinePhoenix Childrens has initiated a national search for a dynamic leader to serve as the next Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. This role will lead a large and growing Division consisting of over 60 physicians, and over 30 APPs as well as 4 PEM fellows per year. The Division provides pediatric emergency medicine at two locations currently, our main quaternary hospital on the Thomas Campus and a freestanding ED on our Avondale Campus. Two more community hospital emergency departments are coming online in . The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division also oversees urgent care at four locations throughout the community. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a physician leader to join one of the largest pediatric health systems in the nation, in the fifth largest city, with a growing and exceptionally diverse patient population. Phoenix Childrens Forty years ago, Phoenix Childrens opened within Good Samaritan Hospital as a hospital within a hospital, and 22 years ago, we embarked on building Arizonas first and only freestanding pediatric hospital. Phoenix Childrens Medical GroupPhoenix Childrens Medical Group (PCMG) has grown to include more than employed physicians, as well as advanced practice providers. PCMG offers care in more than 75 pediatric specialties across 34 clinical divisions at more than 40 sites of service in the state of Arizona. As Phoenix Childrens prepares to open two additional hospitals this year, PCMG is taking steps to ensure world-class care at all points of inpatient and outpatient care throughout our health system. One example has been bringing several divisions in-house to PCMG, including infectious diseases and anesthesia. Position DescriptionThe Division Chief must be board certified in pediatric emergency medicine and have a current Arizona License to practice medicine, or the ability to obtain a license prior to starting. In addition, previous leadership of a division or program with successful development of clinical education and/or research programs is preferred. The Division Chief will lead a division of over providers. Across both emergency departments, Phoenix Childrens sees approximately , ED and Trauma visits annually, with an additional 63, Urgent Care visits. The addition of the two new campuses is projected to add another 80-90, visits a year. Each of the ED sites has a medical director who will report to the Division Chief. In addition, we have a fellowship director, ultrasound director and an EMS/Base station medical director who also report to the successful candidate. The next Division Chief will be an accomplished pediatric emergency medicine physician with excellent administrative, diagnostic, teaching and research skills who will assume a leadership position within this rapidly growing institution. The chosen candidate will participate in strategic planning to ensure the care offered in the division keeps pace with treatment advancements, technological innovation and our growing community. Active involvement in resident, fellow and medical student teaching through affiliated programs with University of Arizona is expected. The Division Chief shall serve as the leader of their division and achieve clinical, research and academic programmatic goals while providing financial oversight of the Division. In addition, the division chief shall provide patient care services and will support the PCH mission of providing hope, healing and the best health care for children and their families.

Position Duties

Patient Care Services 1)Provide patient care services for which he/she is clinically privileged, including but not limited to:a)Provide direct patient care services on an inpatient and outpatient basisb)Provide subspecialty consultations and follow-up.c)Provide diagnostic and therapeutic services/proceduresd)Provide these services for urgent/ emergent care as necessary2)Strive to achieve the best patient and family centered care3)Support Hospitals patient satisfaction goals and develop divisions specific targets4)Support and develop divisional patient safety and quality of care standards 5)Practice Contemporary Evidence based medicine or latest experience based medicine Divisional Responsibilities 1)Provide clinical and administrative leadership of the division in collaboration with the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of PCMG, director, and/or manager 2)Act as key liaison between the division, PCH and PCMG executive management3)Monitor the divisions financial, productivity and quality performance in collaboration with the manager and director; take action as feasible to attain established targets and goals4)Participate in development of and submission of the budget for the division, with support from PCMG administration5)Establish quality metrics for division6)Establish annual staff physician goals and objectives in collaboration with individual physicians within their division7)Evaluate the performance of the physicians in the division annually. Establish remediation plan for underperforming physicians.8)Establish and demonstrate effort to achieve annual division chief goals and objectives (e.g. personal, division, hospital). 9)Review needs of the community for programmatic growth and develop necessary strategies for implementation. This may require:a.Recruitment of physicians as neededb.Identification of resourcesc.Participation in operational strategies10)Support and/or develop the medical education programs and activities of the Division, including but not limited to:a)Provide direct supervision of trainees and allied health care professionals for the delivery of inpatient and outpatient services when applicableb)Conduct teaching rounds, lectures and conference for traineesc)Participate in the teaching and supervision of trainees and allied health care professionals assigned to the divisiond)Participate in the postgraduate continuing educational activities of the division11)Provide vision and development of the research endeavors of the division including the research initiatives by other members of the division12)Support and/or develop satellite expansion as needed13)Hold divisional meetings regularly and communicate institutional messages to staff promptly. 14)Provide a means for staff physician feedback to the division chief Professionalism 1)Treat colleagues, PCH employees and customers with courtesy, dignity and respect2)Promote safe, cooperative and professional health care environment3)Support PCH mission, vision and values, including family centered care, excellence in clinical care, leadership, collaboration, and accountability Other activities 1)Act as liaison to the professional community and general public2)Interface with PCH foundation when applicable3)Physician may conduct teaching rounds or conferences outside of PCH, particularly if these activities support divisional clinical and teaching programs/ initiatives. 4)Physician shall represent PCH in the medical and business communities and before the general public in a professional manner5)The following physical and mental skills are essential to the physicians ability to successfully perform the foregoing duties and responsibilities:a)The ability to communicate by telephone, computer or other communication devicesb)The ability to perform after hours or night call responsibilities as neededc)The ability to work regularly scheduled work hours Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.
