Job Description The Rev. James E. McDonald Center for Student Well-Being aspires to be a trusted leader and partner in enhancing student flourishing and embedding well-being into every aspect of student life. Through health promotion, harm reduction, prevention education, and the cultivation of student leaders in well-being, the McDonald Center strives to empower all students to make healthy choices while inspiring a campus community to create a culture of well-being.
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Health and Wellness in the Division of Student Affairs and is a member of the Student Health and Wellness leadership team.

The Director for the McDonald Center for Student Well-Being provides strategic guidance and leadership in the development and implementation of health promotion and prevention efforts designed to be at the forefront of student health and well-being needs. The Director nurtures campus and community relationships that support holistic well-being, fosters new collaborations that contribute to the development of a culture of flourishing, and serves as an expert in prevention education, harm reduction and health promotion to campus stakeholders. The Director collaborates with others to enhance Notre Dame’s strengths while, at the same time, to promote a campus culture intentional about student flourishing.

Departmental Leadership: Lead the McDonald Center team that consists of a total of 4 full-time employees and contract employees through grants and other initiatives. Maintain a vision for the center that is in alignment with the vision and strategic plan of the health and wellness unit and mission of the Division of Student Affairs. Oversee the department’s strategic planning process and management of goals, priorities, and outcomes. Supervise the functional areas of each team member to ensure the delivery of data-driven, culturally competent programs and services for a diverse student body. Foster working relationships with key campus stakeholders particularly within Student Affairs, Athletics and the Academy. Manage budgets and fiscal resources; responsible for long and short-range strategic, fiscal, and organizational planning. Provide oversight for grant-writing, administration, and implementation activities. Health and Wellness Programming: Oversee strategies and initiatives for fostering student engagement in health promotion and prevention efforts through outreach, peer educators and student leader development. Oversee the continued development and implementation of evidence based, data-driven, and culturally informed initiatives. Focus areas include but are not limited to: values based living, social connectedness, resilience curricula, alcohol and other drug education, sleep and restoration skills, and stress management. Lead the development of new efforts that advance the existing work of the team such as wellness coaching and strategic collaborations to promote health equity. Coordinate delivery of health and wellness orientation programs for undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Facilitate training and programming workshops as needed. Unit Collaboration and Community Engagement: Serve as a member of the Division’s Student Health and Wellness Unit leadership team along with leaders of the University Health Services, University Counseling Center, and the Center for Student Support and Care. This team is responsible for the strategic direction of the unit, increasing communication and collaboration among partners, and addressing common issues and concerns. Participate in unit initiatives such as the People With Hope to Bring Lilly Foundation Initiative, the Division Strategic Planning Advisory Councils as appropriate, and the Student, Faculty and Staff Well-Being Advisory Committees. Participate in Division, Unit and Institutional diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Co-Chair the SHW Unit Alcohol and Other Substance Use Task Force and other coalitions foundational to grant initiatives and special projects. Network and collaborate with key stakeholders on and off campus to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive, highly visible, evidence-informed prevention and educational efforts that achieve measurably high-quality public health outcomes. Contribute content and well-being expertise to first year co-curricular programs and Well-Being and Resilience workshops/courses. Assessment: Supervise the development, implementation, and analysis of student health assessment strategies that 1) provide baseline and follow-up health data for the Unit, Division and Campus Community, 2) identify and share student needs and priorities with campus stakeholders, particularly Student Affairs partners, 3) evaluate effectiveness of interventions and measure learning outcomes of department initiatives, 4) track and report trends in student health status and behavior to help inform policies and community decisions Provide semester and annual reports.
Marketing, Outreach and Other Duties as assigned: Oversee the department’s health and wellness communication, marketing, and outreach efforts particularly those designated by the SHW Leadership Team. Platforms could include, but are not limited to: health expos, department websites, social media, newsletters, print toolkits, and multimedia campaigns. Assumes additional responsibilities as required. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree (5 years) or advanced certification beyond Bachelor’s in public health, health promotion, counseling, health policy, health education, social work or related field. Five or more years of full-time health promotion work experience in a college or university setting and a mastery of the health promotion needs of college students. Five or more years of full-time supervisory experience of professional staff and a demonstrated record of highly effective leadership skills. Knowledge and application of health promotion, behavior change, population-based theories and models, and experience using environmental management strategies and the socioecological model. Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and the development of multicultural competencies. A commitment to the University’s Catholic identity and the ability to implement policies, programs, services and best practices that are consistent with the University’s Catholic mission, values, and teachings. Preferred Qualifications Experience conducting literature reviews, needs assessments, and program evaluations to strategically guide policy, programmatic, and budget decisions. Proficiency working with large datasets to drive decision-making, such as data collected through the National College Health Assessment, WISHES or AlcoholEDU. Interest in developing and pursuing new and innovative ideas. Experience leading coalitions or task forces. Experience with grant writing and administration. CHES or MCHES certification. Familiarity with and passion for substance use risk reduction and emotional well-being content.
