The MultiCare Cancer Institute Medical Director of Supportive Oncology is responsible for the clinical direction of operational, programmatic, fiscal and Providers’ (Physician and Advanced Practice Provider) activities. The position integrates operating goals and objectives for the areas of supportive oncology that include, but may not be limited to: education, prevention and screening; work-up and cross continuum patient navigation; genetics; social work; nutritional counseling; survivorship program; PT/OT; integrative oncology; pain management and palliative care; home care and hospice support; fertility; and others as considered to support the cancer patient throughout his/her/their care journey at all locations across the MultiCare Cancer Institute. The position’s major responsibility is directing clinical supportive oncology programs; supporting regulatory, patient safety and quality initiatives; leading, mentoring and assuring the adequate and efficient provision of Provider, facilities and equipment resources; providing subject matter expertise and thought leadership for supportive oncology research and innovation; and maintaining an environment that facilitates optimal patient care and provider and staff productivity and satisfaction.

The Medical Director of Supportive Oncology position requires independent judgment and discretion in decision making which varies widely in their nature and impact, interpretation of information relating to a wide variety of policies and programs, complex data analysis, problem solving, and strong organizational and leadership skills. This position works closely with the C-suite and AVP Dyad, staff and Providers (employed and affiliated) across the MultiCare Cancer Institute and Health System geography, requiring the development of rapport and the maintenance of professional relationships. Internal contacts include all levels of management and staff, shared corporate support services, multidisciplinary sub-specialty colleagues, and disease-oriented program leads. External contacts include regulatory agencies, Community providers, consultants, donors and outside organizations. The Medical Director of Supportive Oncology oversees supportive oncology physicians and APPs and collaboratively manages provider recruitment, coaching and conduct with the Cancer Institute Chief Medical Officer and President.

Collaborates and supports the AVP of Supportive Oncology with planning, directing, and coordinating functions including: budget and financial performance; quality outcomes; customer service; Provider and staff development, performance and training; and, operational performance. The incumbent reports directly to the MultiCare Cancer Institute Chief Medical Officer. The Medical Director of Supportive Oncology is responsible for ensuring sub-specialty, multidisciplinary care delivery; overseeing and continuously improving quality and patient safety; delivering a unique patient experience; enhancing patient, caregiver and staff satisfaction; and continuously developing and growing the overall supportive oncology service line in size and stature. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief Medical Officer of the Cancer Institute and will work in collaboration with the Institute C-suite, dyad Supportive Oncology Associate Vice President, Cancer Institute physicians, clinical and non-clinical staffs, management team, and departmental and hospital leadership.

Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited medical school. Licensure to practice medicine in the state of Washington. Board-Certified in his/her/their respective specialty. Minimum of 3-5 years clinical experience providing direct patient care. A physician in good standing as a member of the attending or courtesy Medical Staff of MultiCare. Demonstrated leadership skills as a physician executive. Experience as a Medical Director or in a comparable medical leadership role preferred. Credentialed to practice in MultiCare Health System facilities. Master’s degree in business, healthcare administration or public health is preferred. Previous oncology experience, process improvement and medical staff services and support preferred. Demonstrated ability to interact cooperatively and collaboratively with diverse groups.
