National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Postdoctoral Researcher position

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is seeking applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the areas of economics of health. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research projects focused on the consequences of specialty care expansion in health care, with a particular emphasis on disparities in care and underserved populations. The position is located at the organization’s Cambridge MA headquarter, but can also be at UCSF in San Francisco.

Position Overview:

The postdoctoral researcher will engage in multi-year research projects supported by the NIH that will examine multiple topics related to the expansion of percutaneous coronary intervention facilities and/or stroke certification program, and the effects of these expansion on disparities in outcomes for time-sensitive conditions. The researcher will be involved in all stages of the research process, with a primary focus on designing study methods, conducting analyses, supporting the development of data archive that will enable future research in health economics. The researcher will also have the opportunity to develop independent projects and produce peer-reviewed publications. Suitable researcher will be invited to participate in activities of the NBER aging and health fellowship program. The position is one year with an optional extension of an additional year.

Mentorship and Collaboration:

The project is led by co-principal investigators:

•Dr. Yu-Chu Shen, PhD - Professor of Economics at the Naval Postgraduate School and Research Associate at the NBER.

•Dr. Renee Hsia, MD, MSc - Professor and Vice Chair of Health Services Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Qualifications:

•A PhD in economics with subspecialty in health, health policy, statistics, or a related field. Applications from researchers who are just completing their PhDs, as well as from researchers who may be on leave from a college or university position, are welcome.

•Strong quantitative analytical skills and proficiency with Stata (required).

•A track record of successful research projects and mastery of statistical and econometric methods (strongly desired).

•A demonstrated interest in healthcare delivery, health policy, and health disparities (strongly desired).

•Salary is commensurate with experience and follows the NIH guideline.

Start Date:

•Flexible. The position can start as early as summer of 2024 and will remain open until filled.
