Position Summary

The Paraeducator is a temporary, specialized position in Public Programs, in the Learning & Engagement Division. This position will assist Summer Camp teacher(s) and/or other certificated personnel by performing a variety of instructional support duties to individual or small groups of students in a classroom, including assisting students with disabilities encompassing a range of physical, emotional, intellectual, and communication disabilities. Additionally, the Paraeducator will assist in the establishment and maintenance of appropriate classroom and site behavior and perform a routine of administrative tasks as assigned.

This person reports to the Manager of Youth and Family Programs and works in close collaboration with the Public Program team and teaching artists.

Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Provide responsible care-taking, and/or paraprofessional activities in support of the educational objectives of the teaching artists Works with students without disabilities and students with a range of learning, physical, and emotional disabilities, assisting in the implementation of classroom behavior intervention plans where necessary. Works with students in small groups or in prescribed one-to-one assignments, or under the direction of the teacher, provides individualized instruction by matching instruction to the needs of each learner. Assists the teacher in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom and learning environment. Assists in organizing learning environment; prepares and sets up instructional materials and/or equipment for use in classroom activities; maintains instructional material and equipment. Assists teachers in implementing the course of study through one-to-one and group instruction; accompanies or assists students to and from transportation and in moving to and from activities on the museum site. Assists in the supervision and monitoring of students during breaks and in the galleries Performs kneeling, stooping, standing, and lifting activities in the performance of required daily activities. Maintains confidentiality of student records and classroom information in accordance with legal requirements and policies Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Understanding of child development and behavior, and the needs of students with disabilities Basic understanding of artmaking practices for youth Behavior intervention techniques and strategies Understand the needs of assigned students with disabilities and effectively relate to these needs in a learning situation. Effectively supervise and support students with and without disabilities in a variety of situations, maintaining emotional control under difficult and emergency situations Maintain a variety of records related to the activities and operations of assigned students with disabilities in a confidential manner where appropriate. Recognize and report safety hazards; learn, understand, and adhere to laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to the museum and those related to the program which assigned. Exercise tact, diplomacy, and good judgment when supporting students with and without disabilities. Effectively and tactfully communicate in both oral and written forms. Maintain confidentiality of records or discussions Establish and maintain a positive and effective work relationship with all involved with summer camps, including museum staff and interns, teachers, and students. Bilingual (Spanish language) is a plus.

Education and Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED required; Bachelors preferred. Paid or volunteer experience working with students with disabilities

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Arkansas driver’s license with clean driving record; willing and able to travel for program development and facilitation.

: Regularly, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently regionally and in communities served. In the work environment described below, position requires working at a desk and utilizing a computer and a telephone, good eye/hand coordination, bending and stretching, standing and sitting in the ability to move around galleries, the classrooms, and throughout the museum, including travel on the outdoor trails. Visual acuity to review written materials is required for this job. : Work will be performed in an office environment, museum galleries, art studios, outdoors on the trails, and in communities served. Some evening and weekend hours are required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the Museum work environment is usually low to moderate.
