Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts-(QV)

The Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts (AVP, Principal Gifts) coordinates and guides efforts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to cultivate and attract transformational donors, typically above $1,,. This role is integral to campaign planning and the development of significant, cross-divisional ideas that have an outsized impact on the mission of the University. The Assistant VP promotes collaborative and coordinated effort in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This leads to a great understanding and appreciation for the University’s potential impact in the community, and therefore to higher levels of giving.

The Assistant Vice President must be an integral member of the UMB community. They will reflect and embody the values of UMB and its leadership, leading the University advancement efforts and serving the university community with integrity, warmth, humility, grace, and humor. Reporting to the Vice President (VP), the Assistant VP works closely with the University’s senior leaders, including the President, Provost, and Deans. The AVP, Principal Gifts serves at the pleasure of the VP, Philanthropy. The AVP will be expected to travel as necessary for prospect and donor engagement.

Major Functions and Responsibilities

Engagement of Leadership

Serve as a thought partner to the Vice President in building a Principal Gifts program capable of attracting the most sophisticated donors with the highest capacity.
Along with the Vice President, direct the efforts of the President, Provost, and Deans to develop transformational ideas that serve as the core narrative for how philanthropy can drive the University’s impact.
Work with members of the UMB Foundation Board to build an external network of advocates for the University’s strategic vision.

Program Leadership

Work across the University to build a cultural understanding of Principal Gifts and the impact they can have on the mission. This involves working with the chief development officers of the schools to have a shared understanding of the priorities of the schools and the University.
Participate as a key leader in the design and implementation of UMB’s next comprehensive campaign. With the Vice President and leaders from the University and Foundation, direct a campaign planning process that incorporates Principal Gifts as a driving force behind philanthropy. This includes an ongoing process of ideation, program development, implementation, and assessment.
Develop and implement processes, techniques, and plans for cultivating and stewarding transformational donors at the highest possible level.
Develop a structure and plan for the long-term growth of Principal Gifts at UMB. Discover and share news from the industry on best practices in the pursuit of Principal Gifts.

Principal Gift Fundraising

Personally manage a select portfolio of University prospects, directing efforts to successfully cultivate, solicit and steward Principal Gifts. These are defined as approaches of $1,, or more, major gift approaches that involve two or more schools, and/or those that involve the President or Provost.
Formulate a keen understanding of the research and programs unfolding in the University; be able to articulate funding priorities, the University’s mission, and key milestones in clear and compelling terms to a broad array of constituencies.
Travel as necessary to engage donors, prospects, grateful patients, alumni, and friends.

Staff Management

Lead and mentor a small team of professionals, which includes a Principal Gifts Officer and a Director of Strategic Initiatives. Serve as an advocate for staff, representing their needs and concerns.
Creates a cohesive diverse work team that works to collaboratively to achieve University goals and mission. Oversees the recruitment, performance, and training of team members and continually reviews strengths and increase proficiencies of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team.
Maintain a leadership style that is open and fluid; foster an environment that inspires new ideas, builds confidence, encourages teamwork, and promotes diversity. Celebrate current achievements and set clear expectations for future success.
Serve as a resource for gift officers in helping them develop effective prospect strategies, moves management, gift closures, and stewardship; ensure that gift officers prioritize each donor’s intentions and act in the donor’s best interests.
Participate as a key leader in the Office of Philanthropy and across the University’s philanthropy program. Provide frequent opportunities for professional learning and growth; emphasize retention as a means of increasing the capacity, stability, and expertise of the team.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Ten years of experience that demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the field, leadership, management, and administration of philanthropy. Demonstrated experience principal gift fundraising ($1 million or greater). Previous experience in a higher education setting and knowledge of all key areas of advancement, including philanthropy, alumni engagement, and communications preferred. 

Supervisory Experience: Five years of direct supervision and management experience.

Other: Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Commission. Serves at the pleasure of the Vice President, Philanthropy.
