Boston Conservatory at Berklee invites applications for a full-time open rank faculty position in Composition and Theory in the department of Composition, Contemporary Music, and Core Studies. The ideal candidate for this position will be a motivated, creative professional who is committed to excellence in teaching and mentorship, has a robust record of compelling performances of their compositions, and enjoys working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding. This is a 9-month full-time faculty position with a renewable contract; initial appointment to begin September 1, 4. Compensation and rank are commensurate with professional experience.

Composition and Core Studies at Boston Conservatory:
The composition program offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, providing frequent opportunities for performances through our Composers Recital Series, collaborations with student large ensembles, and residencies with guest ensembles. Students are encouraged to experiment and work out ideas, and to treat each performance as a laboratory in which to explore new ideas. Degrees culminate in graduating recitals, and students are required to compose a capstone “thesis” composition.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary duties of this position in the Composition department include teaching private composition lessons as assigned, teaching sections of Composition Seminar, attending events of the Composers Recital Series, and participating in juries and admissions interviews and portfolio review as available. The individual hired may be asked to teach elective Theory courses or other composition-specific courses. Other duties and responsibilities will be based on needs of the department, the candidate’s individual experience along with areas of the candidate’s specialization, as well as service and committee assignments as needed.

Required Skills:

Experience teaching private composition at the college level

High level of familiarity with diverse contemporary repertoire, composers, and performers

Experience teaching in a seminar- or lecture-style classroom

Commitment to supporting a diverse student body, with demonstrated experience fostering diversity in programming, teaching, recruitment, or curation

Ability to teach to diverse musical styles and ways of learning

Commitment to fostering a robust student community through recruitment and admissions efforts

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Composition, Music Theory, or related subject

Minimum 4 years teaching in accredited higher education institution

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Willingness to work within a diverse faculty and student body
