Position Details

Position Information Position Title Communication Arts, Instructor or Assistant Professor of Practice, Multimedia Journalism (2024-25) UIW Mission University of the Incarnate Word is a Catholic institution that welcomes to its community persons of diverse backgrounds, in the belief that their respectful interaction advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realization, and the common good. Position Summary The Communication Arts Program seeks full-time faculty candidates for an Instructor or Assistant Professor of Practice in Multimedia Journalism within the School of Media and Design. This non tenure-track position offers a collaborative and supportive environment where creativity and innovation are encouraged, and where faculty members are valued contributors to the ongoing evolution of our journalism program shaping the next generation of journalists by imparting both traditional and innovative multimedia storytelling skills.

Full-time faculty at UIW are expected to teach four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the spring semester. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission. Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service, and professional activities.

Credentials of finalist will determine final rank as either Instructor or Assistant Professor of Practice. Essential Functions Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program. Prepare course outlines based on approved departmental syllabi. Prepare and deliver consistent, innovative course lectures which align with curriculum goals, incorporating emerging technologies and industry best practices. Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met. Prepare timely and meaningful exams, projects, and assessments for assigned courses. Advise and mentor students in all aspects of multimedia journalism, including newswriting, electronic news gathering, digital storytelling, video production, audio reporting, social media engagement, and other online platforms. Supervise the production of the university’s on-line newspaper publication The LOGOS and integrate with the sister efforts of KUIW (radio) and UIWtv. Provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours. Adhere to UIW Faculty Handbook policies and processes including timely record keeping of student activities, fair and equitable evaluation of student performance, and timely feedback to students regarding their performance in the course. Conduct respectful relationships with faculty, staff, and students both in and outside the classroom. Perform regular scholarly research and publication. Provide service to the respective department, college, university, community, and profession. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge Skills and Abilities Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in journalism. Effective instructional delivery. Proficiency in (or ability to learn and effectively use…) use of instructional technology. Ability to actively engage students in the learning process. Strong professional background in journalism, with a demonstrable record of accomplishment of multimedia storytelling across various platforms. Ability to conduct respectful relationships with students both in and outside the classroom. Ability to work collegially and productively within the university community. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures; Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA. Required Education Rank of Instructor -Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communication, or related field. Rank of Assistant Professor of Practice -BA/BS in Journalism or related field. Required Work Experience Rank of Instructor -experience in the classroom setting, profession, or advanced degree in respective field. Rank of Assistant Professor of Practice - five (5) years of professional practice in field of journalism. Preferred Qualifications Extensive industry experience and the ability to convey industry expectations to students. Interest and experience in teaching a diverse population of students and bringing a knowledge of professional multimedia journalism production to the classroom.
